Simple help needed to save my skin!

Post by cfcboy »

Hi im new to these forums and am in great need of some help to save my skin.

Last week i went to a wedding and got pretty trashed, little did i know that the guy recording the wedding video had had taped me swearing and saying things that probably cant be repeated. Its not much, its only about 10 seconds on a 2hr dvd but its enough for the bride and groom to ask me to try and edit it out!

I have imported the dvd file into VS9 and all Im trying to do is mute out this 10 seconds of embarrasment! Can someone, anyone give me a quick rundown on how to do this, Im after advice on how I actually edit the dvd (mute the 10 seconds) and how to re-author it so I can burn it onto a fresh disk. I have read the pdf but I cant get my head round it, Im after a quick guide for dummies if possible.

Thanks in advance!

Drag the file into the timeline. Click on the speaker icon bottom left hand side of the screen. Click once on the clip in the timeline to highlight it. Scroll through the clip until you find the "colorful" language. Click on the line in the middle of the clip and it will put a little box on the line, you can click and drag this down to mute the sound. Find the end of the interesting language and click there too. The section in between can now be dragged down to the bottom to mute that section. Then go to share and put out a new file. Use that file to burn a DVD.

One more question if I may..

I have created the project (muted sound, added title) but how do I copy this onto disk or as a file on my pc? I click on share and but it asks me to select a file so I choose the thumbnail on the right hand side but it has not saved my changes from my project editing.

So im guessing I need to know how to save my edited file and export it?

Thanks again

With your file in the timeline go to "share" and create a video file first. Theoretically you can actually just go for a DVD burn at this point but it is definitely not advised. Create the file using the same properties that the original video file has and check "do not covert compliant MPEG files." After you have created the file (remember where it is!) then clear the timeline. Go to "share" then burn a DVD, when the dialogue box comes up add the recently created (and children friendly) file and go for it.

When you mean "same properties" do you mean the "same as project" selection or the actual physical properties of my original video file?

Also, how long does the rendering take?

The actual physical properties of the video you changed. What you are trying to do is avoid as much re-rendering as possible to cut down the time.
Rendering time depends on your computer speed and how much work has to be done.

I have a P4 3.2ghz with 1gb of ram. The video is about 49mins long and around 2gb in size. Hopefully it wont take too long..

Thanks for your help, i will post to let you know if Im back in the good books with the bride and groom!

You are welcome. As a final note what you really should do if you run into trouble is read the sticky note at the top of this board, it lays out the procedure very clearly.
Good luck!
