vsx2 closes when mpeg 4 files added to timeline

Post by chrishargrave »

hello again
I have recently 'downsized' to a sanyo xacti vpc-cg100ex camera to lighten my load on holiday!
this produces mpeg-4 video files which I copy straight to a folder on my laptop from the SD card.
I can put these into the vs library and tranfer them onto the timeline and add trnsitions, titles etc. however VS is closing down with increasing frequency.
(same files on my old xp machine seem to work ok albeit depressingly slowly!)
I have been searching the forum and wonder if I should be converting the files to some other format before doing any editing....does that involve using the share option straight after loading the files, and if so, how?

the properties of the original file are
Type mp4 video,
1920 * 1080,
59 frames/sec, bitrate 252,
audio sample rate 48kh

the properties given for the file on the timeline are
Format Mpeg-4 file,
Vid Type H.264 Main profile video, Upper Field first,
Attributes 24bits 1920*1080 16.9
Frame rate 29.970 frames per s
Audio type MPEG AAC 48000 hz 16 bit stereo

I have not been doing any video at all for quite some time so am definately somewhat rusty. Old age isn't helping either!
The xacti was supposed to be simple......oh well!

Thanks in advance for any advice

Chris

I suspect at least part of your problem has to do with the fact that the highest quality setting for your camera has it recording in full progressive mode (59.94 frames per second) at 1920 x 1080 which no version of VS can currently handle -- or at least reproduce in that format. It is only relatively recently on the market and frankly the software companies like Corel have simply not yet kept up. There is a sticky post towards the top of this forum which discussions full progressive mode at some length.

My first advice, therefore, would be to try it at one setting down from top quality: 1920 x 1080 but at 30 (29.97) frames per second. That should still give you extremely good quality -- and hopefully X2 should be able to swallow it without becoming sick.

Failing that, then depending on what you eventually intend to produce (e.g. a standard definition DVD), the general advice would probably be to first convert the mp4 to another format compatible with your end product, using a program like the freeware SUPER.

Thanks Ken for your promt reply
I will experiment with the camera settings and also have a look at 'SUPER'

Hi Chris,
I am having the same problem. I had worked with VS X2 for a long time but with avi files without any problems. I posted my problem about the same time as yours.
Like you, I bought a more compact one; a HD Canon Vixia video camera. I recorded in the middle setting XP+ which is 1440x1080 resolution at 9 MBps. The recorded files are mts files. No problems in getting the footage on the Timeline and no problems in editing each mts files. However, when I tried to play it back after 1 min or so VX 12 stopped working sometimes there was an error message "Out of Memory". So I increased my computer memory to the max 8 GB and still VS stopped after a while. So, I monitored the memory usage during the playback on Windows Task Manager and it appeared that the memory usage of VS kept increasing during the playback. When it gets to just over 900 MB that's when VS stopped working. I also noticed that when I "pause" the playback at memory usage 850 MB, the memory usage dropped down to the beginning (around 100 MB), then I could resume the playback. So, it is a "stop/pause" and "go". Very annoying.
I am also thinking whether or not I need to convert the mts files to, for example to avi files first before placing in the timeline for editing.

There's so many variables that are involved..

1. You're running VS X2 on Win7, not fully compatible. Not saying it will not run, but it's not going to be able to take full advantage of all the improvements Win7 has to offer. For example, using CUDA, GPU. It was not written accordingly.

2. You're running a PC that is a little on the light end for editing one of the most resource demanding video formats. Dual-Cores, and high-end ones are considered on the light-end. It you want smoothness, fast processing, you should use a Quad-Core, and also a Video Card that has a lot of onboard memory.

3. With #2, you would still need to use a program that is written to use the latest multi-core processors (i5, i7, AMDs latest), GPU, and extended memory. VS X2 may not be able to access all the memory you have installed. Just because you max your RAM, does not mean that the program will be able to use it.

I think that with your setup, even with VS X4 you will have problems, however maybe not to the degree you're having now.
