Windvd Pro 2010 + Nvidia 275.33 whql = no video

Post by nalawod »

My Corel Windvd 2010 has been working flawlessly for BD and BD3d playback until I recently upgraded my graphics drivers from Nvidia GeForce 270.61 whql to 275.33 whql. After the upgrade I get no video (black screen doesn't even say "disk loading" or anything). Audio is fine. I tried upgrading Windvd from service pack 5 to service pack 6 and video still is blank. As a last ditch effort to keep the newer Nvidia drivers - I upgraded to Nvidia's beta 275.50 and still no video

I left Windvd on sp6, downgraded Nvidia back to 270.61 and Windvd works fine once again. I've reported the issue to Corel who have subsequently closed my ticket without any resolution. I checked Nvidia forums and there are multiple Corel users reporting no video with latest Nvidia whql.

Latest update: when I first reported this issue 4 weeks ago, it was on my older pc running windows 7 32bit. I've since upgraded my mobo/processor/hard drives and os to windows 7 64-bit. I still have the issue. I'm still running the Nvidia gtx 550ti card and I suspect the problem is due to these newer Nvidia Fermi gpu's. Some users on avsforum have said they got around the issue by minimizing and restoring the Windvd window -- but those users were talking about blank screen when skipping chapters. I have blank screen full time, always. I have tried the minimize/restore. And I've now proven that the missing video is directly related to the 275.33 and later drivers because with 100% consistency, if I roll back to 270.61, I get video just fine again.

Wondered if others are having same experience and/or know anything about this?

Same issues here, black video with 3D Tron and 3D Green Hornet original BD's. If I enable the program ANYDVDHD I get 2D Video. If I create an ISO image and mount with Virtual Clone Drive I playback in 2D. If I burn the image to Blu-ray BD-R DL playback is in 3D!

nVidia driver is good, the problem is with Corel WinDVD 2010 and BD protection with incorrect keys resulting in no Video. You will find no problem with other programs. Also you can go back a version with nVidia and wait for Corel to offer an update but you maybe waiting a long time.

I have wasted a lot of time trying to keep this program running. 2D playback is good, 3D a frustration without support or updates. I have taken time off from work to speak to support as evening waits are long and hours short.

Best of luck

The problem you're reporting is definitely NOT the same problem I'm having. I have TMT5 and PDVD as well and from long experience with all 3 of the major retail BD software pakcages, Corel has given me the very least of problems. In fact TMT5 has never worked with any BD DVD's from Fox and they don't even seem to acknowledge there's a problem. With all 3 of these packages, there have occasionaly been problems with new BD releases (that have new licensing) and/or 3D playback. Even external BD players sometimes need firmware upgrades to play the latest BD dvd's.

Of the 3, only Corel is working for me properly for 3D playback (if I stick to the 270.61 drivers). Also, only Corel will properly play ACHD audio cd's with true 5-channel output as Dolby HD. I'm sticking with Corel - I'm sure they'll fix the problem with the latest Nvidia drivers - I'll just hold off on updating my Nvidia drivers.

The reason for my posting this was just to get some feedback going as there doesn't seem to be a lot of momentum on Corel's part to investigate and/or fix this - seeing as how they closed my ticket with no resolution. If Corel is watching this, my ticket number was 01043376 .

I had the same issue as reported by nalawod and did the same thing: rolled back the driver to 270.61. This fixes the issue, but shows some kind of incompatibility between WinDVD Pro 2010 and NVIDIA's latest drivers. Here's hoping it's fixed soon!

I really wanted to use the latest HD Audio driver from Nvidia because it fixed some sound problems with my Yamaha receiver -- mainly the "silent stream bug" (google avsforum for 100's of references to that). I thought if I used device manager to uninstall and then install the latest whql audio that would work. However, that breaks Nvidia Control Panel (won't launch) and also breaks context menu in windows explorer - explorer crashes if you right-click on the desktop. That's because one of the menu items is Nvidia Control Panel and it's broken if you do what I did. I found a soulution though: Upgrade to latest WHQL and in Device Manager manually remove the display device and manually install the older WHQL. If you do it that way, you get the old display driver which works with corel and you get the new sound driver AND the menus work and explorer won't crash. That's my workaround for now until either Corel or Nvidia fixies this no video issue for the latest whql.

Here is an update regarding no video with nVidia 275.33. I continue to have no video with my 3D Blu-ray DVD's only audio. If I enable AnyDVD HD 6.8.4.0 playback is possible in 3D. This means that disk protection is the issue.

I have confirmed this by creating an unprotected ISO image of the BD and mounting it with VCD. Playback is possible in 3D with or without ANY DVD HD enabled. As an extra step, I burned the ISO to a blank BD-R 50GB ($10) and was able to playback the BD-R in 3D without issue.

Another update: I just tried the nvidia 280.19 driver. Still no video for bluray. I tested several titles including "The American" and a very old one that has always worked "Serenity". While I had this driver loaded I made sure to test standard dvd playbabck. It works fine. As a possible extra "clue", I also noted that no windvd menu or top/bottom menu bars are visible like they normally are if you click in the middle of the screen - the entire video area remains blank even though hd sound is playing fine. Rolling back to 270.61 driver video works again.

Abiel Corel NA, please see my PM to you. We now have multiple users in multiple threads reporting this issue AND confirming that rollback to 270.61 NVIDIA driver solves the problem. We need to get to the bottom of this please?

@Abiel Corel NA:

I'm updating this thread because Windvd Pro 2010 is still broken for me for BD playback if I use any Nvidia driver newer than 270.61. I just tried the latest Nvidia 280.26. got a blank screen (but got sound) when playing/testing multiple BD titles. Rolled back yet again to 270.61 and it works fine again. I really need to upgrade my Nvidia drivers and this is keeping me stuck on the old. My original ticket # for this issue is 01043376 and it is still "status investigating" but the ticket is marked as closed. Surely others on the Nvidia "ti" version of GPU's are having this issue still. I'm certainly not going to pay to upgrade to 2011 version unless I know this problem is fixed.

I guess, due to lack of response from Corel or the forums, I just need to bite the bullet and upgrade my TMT - I hate to do that because I prefer Corel but I'm not going to simply remain on 6 month old Nvidia drivers forever.

Final update with GOOD NEWS. They never fixed Windvd Pro 2010 so my bd video would work past the 275.33 drivers. I decided to pop for the upgrade to Pro 11 because they offered a great upgrade price recently. I was very unhappy initially because the first download install had the same issue. But then it told me I needed to upgrade it- I installed the upgrade and magically the video started working again. They obviously fixed something! I'm a happy camper now.
