Problem with Canon MV630i-I think!

Post by tonyjer »

Hi Everyone

The quality of capture and DVD creation has always been pretty good but I have a specific problem. When you record footage outdoors with plenty of sunlight etc and playback the tape thru the TV the quality is great. (This is just the mini DV tape-prior to capture, edit and burn etc) However when you record indoors you always get a horrible grainy/grubby appearance, especially if the background is dark.

For some time I had put this down to limitations with DVD creation/using DVD shrink etc but then realised that this was the quality of the raw DV footage prior to video editing.

To cut a long story short, about 6 weeks ago the Camcorder failed completely and I had to return to Canon for the CCD sensor replaced. Having paid about $240 I was expecting this defect to disappear but it is still a problem.

Before I make a fuss and embarrass myself is this a normal feature of $640 Camcorders?

I have checked the troubleshooting guide with the Camcorder but cannot find any info on this problem.

Please note that the problem presents when playing back recorder tape thru the TV.

As usual your help and time is much appreciated.

Many thanks.

That's the poor low-light performance of the camcorder rearing its ugly head. I have no first-hand experience with that model, but if it has manual controls, you could try tweaking the exposure by opening up the lens. If it has auto-exposure modes, select a low-light mode instead.

I have the same camera. It is awful at night shots, as most of the cheaper camcorders are. For night shots I always use my trusty Hi-8 camera - much better than DV!
