Need Narration help with Videostudio x4

Post by epiccookieman »

So here is my problem...I drop an Mpeg or WMV Video clip down on the time line...it already has audio on the mpeg or wmv...Now I want to add narration to the mpeg/wmv...So I figured out how to add voice over, but I can't hear the audio from the mpeg/wmv while recording my voice over. Is it possible to hear the audio from the mpeg/wmv while recording voice over.. Please help!

Hi epiccookieman

And welcome to the forums

Try activating Settings-Preferences (f6)-Edit tab - Enable Audio while Scrubbing.

You will probably need ear phones otherwise you will record that sound as well.

I have not used this option whilst using voice over, Let us know if it works

I do not know whether Trevors suggestion works - I have never even thought of trying that - I have never been able to hear the video sound while narrating. So what I do is play the video in VS while using a separate programme to record my narration - which I do in small pieces and then insert the sound files into VS placing them where I want them manually. The advantage of doing it in small pieces is that if one segment does not sound right - or if I cough or there is some other background noise it is very quick and easy just to replace that narration clip.

Hi Brian

When I said I had not tried voice over with scrubbing, I did as a test and it seemed to work, although I didn’t speak. Just made sure I could hear sound.

Not sure if my brain is fast enough to speak and listen at the same time, I know what the wife thinks!

I do it the old fashioned way. I go through my video, time the spots where I want voiceovers. Then I write a script with the inserts timed to fit. I then record the voiceovers separately using Audacity (or in the past, Nero's Wave Editor). This gives me good control over the sound, and as has already been mentioned, allows you simply to do things again if something goes wrong or doesn't sound right. It also do a very brief fade in and out using Audacity to avoid any intial or final pops which you sometimes get using a microphone. I then save each voiceover as a .wav file and insert them in the appropriate spots, adjusting the original video audio and background music volume to suit.
