V9 corrupt video capture playback.

Post by RobertNash »

I'm trying to capture hour long videos played on my analogue camcorder.
However, I have a problem when I review the video captured in so much as I get white rectangle boxes in the video playback.

These are not seen during capture on the screen but only shown during playback.

The idea being I want to capture the hour long video and then break it down into smaller clips.

Any ideas on why I am getting video playback corruption?

Thanks in advance,

Robert

How are you capturing? If this is through a NVIDIA Video In / Video Out card, then the white rectangle is courtesy of a Macrovision signal, either real or imagined (due to a degraded video sync).

OK.

So this degraded video signal will explain why it comes and goes?
The white rectangle that fills the middle 2/3 of the screen is the result of the Nvidia card and macrovision even though its a home video?

Anyway of removing it?

Yes, you've got a poorly sync'd or weak video signal, and the WDM capture driver is misinterpreting it as a Macrovision subsignal. When the NVIDIA drivers detect Macrovision (or think they do), they put a white horizontal bar that fills the middle third of the screen over the data being captured, while still displaying the full image in the hardware overlay.

You can get a video stabilizer such as those from Sima and feed the signal through it, use an external capture device that can bypass Macrovision, or you can try the WMD capture drivers V1.08 -- they were the last revision to not look for Macrovision.

Thanks for the advice.

Installing WDM 1.08 and it solved the problem.

I wondering now whether to purchase a TBC, and DV Camcorder (firewire) or a external capture card without Macrovision.

What do people recommend?

Does anyone know a part from Macrovision what the differences between WDM 1.08 and the latest WDM drivers. Are there improvements to the quality of captured videos?

Thanks again,

I've seen comments indicating that the later drivers deliver slightly better quality, but I cannot confirm this. The fact that V1.09 and later falsely detect Macrovision in home recordings is such a giant bug in the drivers that NVIDIA should spend whatever resources necessary to fix it.

If you get a DV camcorder, make sure it has pass-through encoding capabilities -- some do not, including models destined for European markets where this feature results in additional taxes during importation. Also be aware that such a camcorder should properly record home movies, but it will not record Macrovision-protected material.
