Welcome to the forums,
We need more information to provide a sensible solution. Please go to the sticky at the top of this forum titled Please Read this first before Posting and provide as much detail as you can. You can right-click on clips in the timeline or Library and select Properties to determine what they are, and please post them here. Try to provide the make/model of your camcorder, any conversion done to video clips, and if so from what format to what format, prior to inserting them into VS.
I skipped VS 6 & 7 so the closest to your version I have is VS 8. Somewhere I have the User Guide/Manual for VS 6, and will try to locate it, and have a look. I know there's going to be some differences in them. Does the video clip you're using record the audio using Dolby? If so, I think VS 6 is not capable of editing Dolby Digital audio, IIRC Dolby was not really any part of VS until at least VS 8, and that would take a plug-in. I know the TBYB or SE versions would not allow Dolby.

For your Dolby audio you can try the free AC3 Filter found HERE. It will at least let you here the audio track, and then you can output it to WAV.
