I normally zoom into into the image (5000%) and use the eraser (1px) and remove pixel by pixel. Works excellent because PSPP has a big advantage: I mark the size of the eraser, go to that part of my image and scroll a bit to get the proper size.
If you have good visible contrasts (like the grey and white in your image), then you can use the background remover tool. But at the end, I always have to remove pixel by pixel from the edges.

You could try using vectors to outline the shapes and then create selections from those vectors to erase a thin layer of pixels from the edges. It's a little time-consuming to adjust the various vectors around. But the process is simple.
