painter essentials 4 crashes on startup

Post by Papa Fisheye »

Please direct me to the right forum if this product isn't discussed here. As some know, it comes on the installation CD of PSPX3.

Quite simply, three seconds after double clicking the program icon, I get this. I'm on the second installation. Patches won't install. I get the message " product that needs to be updated not found" or something similar.

I've researced the web, but fall short on solution. One thing I've read is that large amounts of system RAM cause trouble.

Thanks,

Sorry -- but this set of forums does not handle Painter or Painter Essentials. There is a whole different set of Corel communities for the 'art' side of things. You will find the Painter Essentials forum at http://essentialscafe.com/Default.aspx

Let me mention that Painter Essentials 4 will not run on Windows 7 64 bit. It's a 32-bit program and only works on a 32-bit machine.
I work for the Corel UK Support. I will not give technical support through this forum and my answer is only related to this thread.

Oh, so then it shouldn't be running on my machine. I'll let it know that it can crash now and stop working now. Honestly it should know better than to be running on a 64-bit machine.

People give different answers on the 64 bit subject, but officially it's supposed to work according to Microsoft and Corel, although Microsoft specifically says it works on Window 7 64 Bit and Corel just says it's compatible with Windows 7, without mentioning 64 bit or 32 bit.

That's correct, there are different interpretations. If I'm not mistaken, and if I am, someone will correct me on this, PSP X3 is not a true 64 bit application, yet it runs on 64 bit OS.

Yes PSP (any version) is only a 32-bit program and it runs just fine on Windows 64-bit. Now some say that their programs are "compatible" with 64-bit machines which only means that they know that it'll run on a 64-bit machine. But unless the program itself is 64-bit it doesn't make any difference whether or not your OS is. 32-bit programs, if that's all you're looking at, run perfectly well on 64-bit machines (Vista might have issues but that's because it's 64-bit version ate up a lot of memory and resources Windows 7 is better) because the OS has been designed to run them. Probably the only time you're going to run into problems with 64 vs 32 is if you try to run a 64-bit program on a 32-bit OS not the other way around.

Let's explain: please open the links

We have Painter Ess 4 as single version, works on XP and Vista both 32-bit http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... bview=tab0

We have a Painter Ess 4 as part of the PSPPX3 Ultimate, which works on XP, Vista and Windows 7, all 32-bit systems only.: http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... bview=tab0

Painter Ess 4 in PSPPX3 was updated in order to work on Windows 7 32bit, however the program itself wasn't made for Windows 7. All customers I got, experienced crashes and it also crashed on our test machine. There might be a 7 64-bit system out there which works with Painter Ess 4 (PSPP one), however, this doesn't mean it should work.

We have no information when a Painter Ess for Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit) will come out. :(

I hold out no hope for a 64-bit version with the way certain questions have been going on CorelYourWay website.

But even so, again Windows 7 64-bit runs 32-bit programs perfectly well. I can run old Windows 3.1 programs on Windows 7 64-bit (And they aren't even 32-bit programs). It's not 32 vs 64 that's the problem.

I would say at this point it's not looking like PE4 and my Windows 7 64 Bit machine will get along - nevertheless, I'll keep trying. I posted to the forum at essentialscafe.com, and am waiting on their take.

I also mentioned in that forum about reading that some say large amounts of RAM are bothersome for PE4. With 12GB myself, I probably qualify for that. My alternatives at this time include installing PE4 on my old XP machine, and/or attempting to run an old version of Virtual Painter from 2005 on my 64 Bit Windows 7.

Thanks All

Levi is correct, there are 32-bit program that can be run and installed on Windows 7 64-bit and there are 32-bit program that cannot be installed. The reason? My guess is better than yours, but just to make it official Painter Photo Essentials included with PaintShop Pro Photo X3 is also Windows 7 compatible, if you can install and use it on your Windows 7 64-bit program, you will be one of the lucky few, but that does not mean it will work on other people's computer.

I try everything I know to install the program on my computer but I cannot install it, it hangs at startup. So I just gave up and remove it.

I'm not one of the lucky few. It installs, but won't run. There's likely some workaround waiting to be discovered, so I'll stay on it, time and patience permitting.

Unrelated to this, the good news is that PSPX3 quit crashing once I started doing all of my adjustment previews in the preview window instead of on the image!

I have both Corel Painter Essentials 4 and Corel Painter Photo Essentials 4 and they came as freebies with different versions of PSP. Both run on my Windows 7 64 bit system. I recently had a crashing issue with Corel Painter Photo Essentials 4 and after running a repair through add/remove programs in the Control Panel it worked again, so you might want to try that.

Tried that....no dice. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

What keeps coming back are reports that the painter software won't run on systems that have large amounts of memory. With 12GB or RAM, I fit into that category.
