Need more memory?

Post by daddog »

I have been using my two HDR-CX550V cameras for filming some martial arts tournaments.
After I sync them I simply switch between the clips with the better views for just one clip on the main track. Learning how to use the ripple editing has really helped. It has worked out pretty well, but it is starting to bog down. As I watch the tracks (video track and overlay) I just pick the best shots and place them in the video track. Problem is it stutters, hesitates, and gets so slow I can hardly do any editing.

The length of both tracks is about an hour. (The final prodcut will be about 20 minutes long when I am done). I cut them to 30 minutes thinking that would help to work with 2 30 minute segments as opposed to 2 60 minute length, but it does not. I am editing using the 'Smart Proxy' which uses proxy files in place of the larger HD files. Not sure what else I can do so it does not bog down. After working for about 5 minutes it just slows down so much I have to close it.

Is my rig a little short on cpu and memory for such a task? Is there something I can do to move things along?

I think your CPU is more of the problem than memory (RAM). AVCHD is not an easy format to edit on mid-range computers. A dual core is at the bottom end of what a person should use. A good quad-core is what most recommend for editing such highly compressed video.

Hi James

Are you intending to burn a HD disc, (Bluray or Avchd) or are you intending to burn a standard DVD.
If the latter you may be best to first batch convert your videos to a more suitable editing format.

Smart Proxy
Double check that proxy files have been created, these can take some time to create.
A small double icon is placed on the thumbnail when proxy files have been made.

By the way you could if you wished add your pc details to your profile which will show on the right of post.
