adjusting audio levels on many clips

Post by dumbdumber »

I've have saved a video/photo project that also has several audio tracks. These tracks all seem to be at different audio levels. Is there an easy way of adjusting them all so they will play at similar level ?
Or do I have to go into each one and rely on my ears to get them to sound about the same?
Thanks
Trevor Andrew

Hi

You have to adjust the volume of each clip in order to level the volume.
You can set the level by adjusting the %age adjacent to the digital clock

Make sure your PC speakers are set to the correct volume before adjusting Video Studio.

You can also use the Normalize audio setting when you plan to create a disc using your vides.

Hi

Burn Disc – Normalise audio.

What does it do?
I assume it adjusts the total audio levels between files (titles) added to the burner module. (Video/VSP)

It should NOT however adjust the audio levels within the individual files.

You would have to be editing the project to do this ……………

Trevor, I believe you are correct. And moreover, it really only works if the audio levels are somewhat close. If there is a big difference in the audio levels it won't do much to fix that.

Hi Trevor

This thread proves more or less that the feature “Normalize” brings the same problems in VideoStudio as MF users encounter. It is so disappointing that this feature does not work as one may expect.
I have posted a question to ABIEL in the MF Forum (I don’t use VS, I’m the last MSP8 user  ) asking him to give his comment on the use of “Normalize” which I believe is the same function for VS as well as for MF.

Hi

Assuming you add projects to the burner module and applying Normalise why would you want to change the volume levels within the project.
These should be adjusted correctly when editing your project. Indeed you may require different levels throughout the project, so you wouldn’t want them automatically changing.

However you may need each titles levels correcting and apply Normalise, although if the levels are correct in the first place you wouldn’t apply Normalise.

I don’t use Normalise at all.

Normalise for me does what it is supposed to do, I have no problems in understanding how it is supposed to work.

Kim Kok ……….what do you expect Normalise to do?

Hi Trevor, I expect normalize to make volume levels consistent between clips because different video clips normally have different audio recording levels which is unavoidable.
I have no problem in understanding how it is supposed to work, but I have tried to make clear that it is not working in my case. Burning a DVD with 4 clips and normalize checked brings a unspecified error, burning with normalize unchecked gives no problem.
If “normalize” refuses the job, you can do it yourself as I said “by ear”. Adjusting the audio waveform of a clip in the Edit Room is not an adjustment within a project. That is my evaluation of the volumediffernces between the clips and my adjustments to balance the levels. So nothing more or less than what I understood normalize should do for me.
You said: “I don’t use Normalize at all” and somewhat further you say: “Normalize for me does what it is supposed to do”. Does that mean that you can make volume levels between clips consistent and MF works fine?

Hi

Maybe I misunderstood your problem.
I had assumed you expected “normalise” to alter the volume levels of clips within a project file.

I now understand that you are adding several video files not projects.
Normalising the audio between different clips should work, this is what it is supposed to do.
But and as Jeff says “it really only works if the audio levels are somewhat close.”

Your problem is not with the normalising process but you receive errors when you try.
Something you haven’t mentioned before, if you have I have overlooked it.

When you do use normalise the operation will render the clips, without normalise the disc will be burnt without converting the clips, (assuming you are adding compliant Mpeg2 video files?)
So the error may be the conversion process and not normalise?

I cannot comment on MF as I do not use this program.
