Does VS X4 work with high end HD? AF100

Post by Time Traveler »

Hello,

I've used VS for the past 6 or 7 years with various cameras. I would like to continue using it as I've become quite attached to it, but now I am considering upgrading to a very powerful camera by Panasonic. I was going to go with the HVX200a but it uses P2 cards and the DVCPRO HD codec which I know for a fact is not compatible with VS. So the HVX200's out but the AF100 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/7 ... hirds.html uses the AVCHD codec which VS supports.

I want to know if VS will take the AF100's video files at 1080p 30 and 1080p 24 given the right computer (I'm getting a desktop specifically for this).

I've done a bit of research on here about VS's compatibility with AVCHD over the years, and I know that by now (x4) it should be very much stable but I just wanted to make sure before I go and make some serious purchases. Any suggestions or comments would be helpful.

Thanks,
Matt

I don't know... Sorry to reply with a non-answer....

Is there a Panasonic forum? I think you are more-likely to find more Panasonic AF100 users that use (or have tried) Video Studio, than you are to find Video Studio users that have an AF100.

You know what I mean? There are hundreds of camera models, but only a handful of popular video editing programs.

Looking at your system details, I wonder if you have a PC with enough guts to really work with AVCHD. If you're looking at around $8k for a pro camcorder, and want to get the most out of your videos, hopefully you have a good, high-end quad-core, or better PC. Otherwise you're going to be real frustrated with how slow things are going.

Many, many people use AVCHD files with VS and have no problems. Don't know what other advice you are looking for.

If you do a search of this forum, you find posts that answer your question. I have Panasonic GH1 and GH2 cameras that produce 1080p24, 720p60, that work fine with VS X4. Had you searched this forum you would see this already discussed at great length and great detail. However, look at the specs of my pc and you see that my system is very capable... Al

You guys actually gave me exactly what I wanted to hear. A little reassuring that AVCHD works well in VS now. I did some searching and mostly viewed topics that were from 2008 back when things were a bit iffy with that codec. Also thanks or letting me know what cameras you use al, you turned me on to the the GH2. Thanks for recommending it. I think I might go with that since you say it works fine with VS and it's a few thousand cheaper than the AF100.

Thanks,
Matt

Hello, Matt-

Wow, you should enjoy that camera! I went from a crappy consumer miniDV to the Panasonic AG-HMC40. Well below the AF100 but I really enjoy it. It records in AVCHD 1080 60i, 30p, and 24p (and 720 resolution at different frame rates) and three or four data rates. I had trouble with VS X3: the issue was the audio on the first clip was in sync with the video, but later clips were not. I didn't notice this until I viewed clips with people talking. I have VS X4 now, but am waiting on a new computer before I try it out. Should be within a few weeks. If it's important to you I can try it on this machine (look at my specs: not a new computer at all).

FYI here is the most helpful forum I've found for Panasonic cameras:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/forum.php

You can scroll down until you find the AF100. You can also scroll down to post production, but it appears they all use high end software: Avid, Edius, Final Cut, Premiere, and Vegas. Like you, I'm very familiar with VS editing and not anxious to jump ship. If the sound sync issues are not resolved, then I'll have to.

If you can test it out on your current machine that would be great. If not I'd still love to hear how it works on your new machine. This would be valuable information. Let me know.

Thanks,
Matt

Hello Matt,

If you already got your Camera but not your PC and want to try out VS X4, then I would recommend that you download the trial from www.corel.com/trials

Hi again, Matt-

This morning I installed X4 on my current computer (no new one yet). The installation was a snap. But, the same problem exists: audio slightly off from video on second and subsequent clips (all clips, by themselves, are fine). I did it without crossfades, etc to see if that helped, but it did not. The last time I contacted tech support, they had me install an older version of quicktime, which not only didn't fix the problem, but our iTunes software really scolded us repeatedly until we went back to the newer version. So, I'll try tech support again, but I'm losing hope that Corel has the ability to handle the complexities of the many variations of AVCHD properly (despite the AVCHD logos all over the boxes).

I strongly agree with the previous comment that you should download the free version and try it out first. I wish I had. You may be fine.
