PsintShop Photo Pro X3 cannot Import Twain; My ol PSP v8 Can

Post by wklang »

Note: I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate, 32-bit.

I just downloaded and installed the trial version of Paintshop Photo Pro X3 to replace my old Paint Shop Pro v8. (PSP8 stopped allowing me to crop images a few months ago and I don't have the time or expertise to figure out why).

The old PSP8 will allow me to import a twain image from my Epson 3170 scanner (even after loading and installing Paint Shop Photo Pro X3). My new (trial) Paintshop Photo Pro X3 has the import twain grayed-out.

Following the installation of Paintshop Photo Pro X3 and finding that it didn't see the scanner, I reinstalled the Epson software.

Paintshop Photo Pro X3 still has the twain import menu option grayed out.

Has anyone else had this problem, and - if so - how did you get around it?

Thanks,

Wes

Do you have all of the patches installed that are available (I don't believe you can install patches with the trial version though).
Do you not have anything under File > Import > Twain Source? You'll need to select the source if it's available.

Thanks for the reply, Dan.

I have not downloaded/installed any patches since I installed the trial version of Paintshop Photo Pro X3 (PSPPX3).

Under File -> Import...the only menu option NOT grayed out is Screen Capture.

My guess is that PSPPPX3 is not seeing my Epson 3170 scanner and I'm not sure how to go about making it see the scanner. The puzzling aspect of this problem is that my old PSP v8 can see the same scanner on the same computer and plugged into the same USB port.

My intention is to purchase PSPPPX3; I've been happy for a number of years with the PSPv8, but as I indicated in my first message, something has changed in the last few months and it no longer will allow me to crop images.

Since I do a lot of scanning and cropping of images, I'm not really anxious to purchase PSPPX3 if I cannot acquire images from the scanner with it.

For the next 28 days or so (with the trial version), I can acquire scanner images with my old PSPv8, save them as files, and then quit PSPv8 and crop these images with PSPPX3....but this is cumbersome.

I believe that the trial version of X3 doesn't allow you to patch the program (I can't confirm that as I have a licensed copy on all of my computers) and one of those patches fixed a twain driver of some sort. I had a twain driver issue at one point and now I don't. I believe it was patch 3 or 4 that cleared it up, but if you ever get to installing the patches install them in order.

Personally I use Vuescan for my scanning needs. I use PSP for the post processing fixups, cropping, and the like, but for the initial scan Vuescan does a great job. It can even crop a previously scanned image, although it is more cumbersome for that. That being said I have to tell you that I didn't use PSP's twain acquire at all, and the only reason I knew of the problem was to test out features so I never gave it a chance to screw up or fix or whatever.

If you go to C:Windows/Twain_32 folder on your computer do you see the twain driver there?

It seems that Epson 3170 scanner is an old model, you may want to download and install the TWAIN Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v3.04A for windows 7. You can obtain the update here http://pnoy.me/2p

I downloaded and installed (in order) the four patches for Paintshop Photo Pro X3 (PSPPX3) from Corel. Made no difference; PSPPX3 still has the File -> Import -> Twain ->Acquire menu option grayed-out. (In fact, everything under File -> Import EXCEPT Screen Capture is grayed-out).

I just downloaded the Windows 7 drivers from the Epson site; this included Epson Scan. In invoking Epson Scan utility, it works with my scanner, but I don't know how to check the version number to see if it's 3.04A.

My old Jasc PSP v8 and GIMP 2.6 both work with the current system/scanner.

I'm a bit puzzled, but suspect the solution is available. Surely others are using this tool with TWAIN scanners.

Perhaps if we can't address the twain issue we can address the issue with your previous version of PSP. Have you tried anything to get it to work or is it out of your realm to try? Did you ever have it running on your Win7 machine?

A few things to consider with Win7 (or Vista) with older software is that Windows operates a bit differently than with previous versions. There's this annoying thing called UAC (User Account Control). You may have seen the Apple TV commercial with the security guard Most people I know just turn it off (Win7 was much less annoying than Vista pre-Service Pack 1), and Corel suggests you turn it off when you install PSP X3. Click the Start button and type User Account Control in the search box, when the window for UAC comes up drag the slider all the way to the bottom.
Next, find the actual .exe file for the program you want to run, be it X3 or PSP 8. Right click the shortcut that starts your program and click properties. In the shortcut tab click Open File Location, the window that comes up will have the file highlighted. Right click that and click properties. Click the Compatibility tab and check Run This Program in Compatibility Mode using Windows XP (I'd suggest SP2 but you can try different ones). While your there click Run This Program As Administrator. Click Apply, OK.

Now when you try to use that program it will be less inhibited. When I installed X3 onto my system I went to the trouble of running the installer as Admin and in XP compatibility mode. I currently do not run the program under those though. Try these settings out on your PSP 8 and see if it works any better for you.

I'm currently using Windows 7 Ultimate and, until a couple of months ago, I was happily using my old Paint Shop Pro v8 (with the same Windows 7 and the same Epson 3170 scanner). I had no problem scanning - and I still have no problem scanning with PaintShop Pro v8.

A couple of months ago, PSP v8 started giving me an error when I tried to crop and image. I assumed this was a reulst of some OS patch or library change; these things are expected as the software application ages. So, as a temporary measure, I started using GIMP 2.6 for manipulating and cropping images, but was reluctant to "learn" a new application..

This caused me to look into Paint Shop Photo Pro X3. I downloaded the trial version and installed the four patches and am currently at version 13.2.1.20. I also downloaded and installed the latest drivers and utilities for the Epson 3170 and Windows 7.

My problem - and what's keeping me from purchasing Paint Shop Photo Pro X3 - is that it does not "see" my USB-connected Epson 3170 scanner. I find this odd since my old PSP v8, GIMP, and EpsonScan utilty all have not problem seeing the scanner and scanning images.

True, I'm not dead in the water. I can learn to use GIMP or I can scan with my old PSP v8, save the image, and then crop using Paint Shop Photo Pro X3.

Anyway, I was just hoping that someone else in this forum had had a similar problem and could suggest their fix.

Thank you all for your replies and suggestions.

In Win 7 32/64 turning off UAC does not remove all security protection unlike earlier Win versions. I recommend using the shortcut for PSPPX3, right clicking on it, and selecting in advanced properties run as admin.

There is a difference with logging as an admin and a program set to run as admin. Setting a program to run as admin elevates the security setting of the program itself. Some programs directly request this as well in their code. This level allows access to system level calls and plug-ins.

It is possible that the trial version does not have this built in and can't get to the twain driver in the win folder structure.

Just a thought.

If this can not be resolved here is a program option you can try free as a utility:

http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/epson_pe ... _3170.html

Note the comments on the driver description link above regarding 32/64 bit.

The trial version just watermarks the images and if you register it (pay) the watermark goes away.

My old PSP v8 sees my Epson 3170 scanner and I have no problem scanning.

The problem with PSP v8 - and the reason I am looking into Paint Shop Photo Pro X3 - is that a few months ago the "crop" command became grayed-out. I assumed that this came about as a result of patches to some library on my system. I have not got the expertise or (for that matter) the inclination to devote adequate time to diagnose why the "crop" is now grayed-out and how to fix it.

I was happy to see the Paint Shop Photo Pro X3 crops images fine. Now if only I could get it to seem my scanner.

If this is still the problem:
Paintshop Photo Pro X3 still has the twain import menu option grayed out.
Open PSPPX3 and change to Full Editor. If there is no general problem with the scanner, then it will work. If it doesn;t work in Full Edit mode, then there is an incompatibility with the scanner.

Most people try to scan in Organizer mode but it doesn't work. We are already aware of this misunderstanding and have forwarded it to the development team as enhancement request.

Thank you, thank you, Simone Corel UK.

I was trying to scan in the Organizer mode (I didn't even realize there was a full edit mode).

When I followed your instructions and changed to the full edit mode, I was able to use my scanner.

I will now purchase PSPPX3 since I can both scan and crop in it.

Thanks again,
