A couple PSPX3 issues (text editing & setting guides)

Post by AdamB5000 »

I recently purchased X3 and have a couple issues that are bugging me and wondered if they might get addressed.

The first is the text editing. I did some Googling and found other people have the same issue. I was hoping there was an option to change it but found nothing. When I enter text I like the scroll through the hundreds of fonts I have to find something that looks good. Apparently I can only manually click one at a time and searching for a font takes forever. But the same happens with other text editing features. For example I was adjusting the kerning while working on some number layouts in a circular fashion. I'd highlight the kerning option and scroll the mouse wheel. After the numbers adjusted I wanted to make another adjustment so I scrolled again but this began zooming in and out on my image! I had to re-click the kerning box to make more adjustments. Very frustrating.

And while I was setting guides on an image to make sure this particular piece of work was all centered (many circles), if set a guide but held it too long getting it lined up, PSP would crash ("not responding"). Also, if I drug a guide away and my mouse went to the side of the screen ("off" the screen) it would crash. I have to work quick with the guides and make sure my mouse stays within the program. Very vexing and frustrating. The image was only 300x300 and had very few layers, possibly one layer at the time.

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
AMD Phenom II X2 555
Radeon HD 5750

See it's because things like this that I always recommend someone use the trial before buying. X2 did not have this problem and it might have been possible to get that on sale.

Unfortunately the text is not fixed yet in X3. So the problem you mentioned is known. You might be able to get a script that filters through all of the fonts for you but even that's more of a hassle than it's worth. I've heard rumors about the next version, but nothing verifiable. And there's still hope that the fifth patch (assuming it's still coming) might fix more problems though which ones no one knows.

No the text problems came because the whole "edit on canvas" feature is brand new and it wasn't properly tested before its release.

The guide-bug that you mention has actually existed since PSP 8. But it's always effected people differently. Some it would never crash, others it would crash right away. Luckily this only effects, as far as I'm aware that is, guide creation. After you've made the guide the crash shouldn't happen. So the work-around for this is to drag it onto the canvas and drop it immediately. Pick it back up and move it into place. One second difference in time at the most, and that's if you're slow.

One of the patches was supposed to fix the guides issue. It made it much more stable for me, but I never used the guides until someone pointed out the bug and I tried it just to see if it would crash. Now I have to really try to get the guide bug to happen. Make sure you have all patches installed and not just the last one. The second patch is supposed to contain the first patch but I install the first, then second, then third etc... anyways. I don't remember which patch had the bug issue in it but I think it's the second patch.

As far as text the only thing I can suggest is to open Word or another text editing program and look at the fonts there first. Yep, it's a pain.

Df you make an excellent point. It looks like he has Patch 3 already. If I remember correctly patch #3 was 13.2.1.15 and Patch #4 was 13.2.1.20.

So there is still a patch for you to download that fixes a couple of problems that Patch #3 created as well as stabilizing the program some more.

However, unlike df the guide bug is still pretty quick for me even with all of the patches so I make no guarantees on the patches being of any real improvement for you. Though they very well could be and I don't want to suggest that they won't fix the problem for you. But again, it's extremely variable between users. And so the workaround is still a great way to go and it doesn't hurt your process at all.
