"Share as E-mail" doesn't work with Thunderbird

Post by gning »

I'm running PSPP X3 under Windows 7 x64.

So I select some jpegs in the Organizer and click the "Share as E-mail" button... and what does it do? It puts up an alert saying
There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.
So I check the control panel, and sure enough, Thunderbird is indeed set as the default for both MAPI and the Mailto protocol.

Anyway, X3 then puts up a "E-mail as" dialog, and won't let me select "embedded"; it's grayed out. I select "Original" as the size and hit OK, and the "no email program" alert comes up again. Then it successfully creates a new message in Thunderbird with the image attached... but it's useless because I wanted it embedded.

Fortunately I was able to get that result by dragging the selected images to a Thunderbird message-composition window. (Though of course I then had to rearrange them into the right order. Which I suppose I would have also had to do with the other method.)

The embedded option is greyed out because simple MAPI clients like Thunderbird and Outlook Express aren't capable of the degree of automation required to produce an email with an embedded image from another program.
For that option to work (and show up) you need an email program that supports Extended MAPI, which mostly means the full version of Outlook that comes in Microsoft Officve.

Tim is right, you can still use Thunderbird to send the photo directly from PSP as a file attachment. Just make sure that you save your project first before sending it. :)

Well, phooey. I guess I probably won't use the feature very much then. So it doesn't matter too much that PSPP is sometimes convinced that there's no email client there, even though there is and it's working correctly.

As for being convinced there isn't an email client.

My opinion here, and not a fact at all, they do a check for extended MAPI and when it doesn't return one capable of it gives that error and then proceeds to the email when it finds the simple one. In other words they goofed on either when to give the error or what the error says. But like I said, no proof, just a guess, and a far fetched one at that.
