VS9 crashing in edit mode
Moderator: Ken Berry
Pete,
I think I can put your worries at ease... I have completed a whole DVD project over about 4 evenings with the "Ulead has encountered a problem and must close" sitting happily in the background. While it is a pain that it does this, it is not the end of the world and doesn't seem to have any adverse effect on the outcome of your project...
I am wary of deleting and installing as my templates don't seem to load properly whenever I do this.
Good luck anyway.

Also able to edit for extended periods with error message
rowladar,
Unfortunately after performing the full uninstall/reinstall, I continued to get the same crash with the same frequency we've both experienced.
However, on your advice, I began and completed a project today with the crash message window shoved down to the bottom of the screen. The project took 3 hours to complete and over 2 hours and 45 minutes of that time was spent with the crash box in the bottom of my screen.
About every 15-20 minutes, I'd save my work and at the end of the project, I generated a disk image which I then immediately burned to disk. I'm happy to say there were no problems with either the saved project file or the final disk. Thanks a lot for this work around. I'm much happier with the software, but there is obviously a problem the the folks at Ulead need to work out. I'm just relieved we don't have to wait for that to happen.
Thanks again.
Pete

Pete -- I assume you realise that in VS9 you can set it to automatically save your work. Go to File > Preferences, down towards the bottom of the first page. The default is 10 minutes but you can adjust this up or down. So in fact you could set it to auto save more regularly that the 15 - 20 minutes you say you used in your project.

Hi,
I did check my power options and they were set to Never auto power off the monitor.
So i suspect it could be the program trying to access my RADEON Graphics card and some how when VS9 crashes it also crashes the graphics card.
The only way around it was to reboot the pc.
Once it got so bad that i couldn't even boot into windows!!!! Luckily i have TrueImage which makes it easier to restore my windows partition!!!!
But this sort of thing is just not on for a PROFESSIONAL product!!! VS7 was the most stable i found. I am so close to dropping VS9 and the money i spent on it!!!!!
it's so bad that i can't even edit a title before the screen goes black and i have to restart my pc. I don't even spend 2 minutes on the app before it crashes!!!

Oh sorry. got carried away.
It happens when i'm putting a title to a clip or a picture. I've got a mix of pics and video clips that i'm putting titles and transitions to.
It's fairly random at which point it occurs. Sometimes i've just finished putting a title onto a pic and am in the process of moving the slider bar pass the transition to the start of the next pic or clip.
Or i've just put the title on a clip and am in the process of moving the title
slider to the next clip or picture.

Auto save
Ken,
Thanks for the friendly reminder about the autosave. I actually had set it up for 15 minutes, but chose to manually "save as" because I noticed that when I would manually "save" (i.e. not "save as") prior to receiving the dreaded error message, any changes I'd made would not be saved if I acknowledged the error popup window and allowed the program to close. <--a long winded sentence, sorry about that but I think its all in there...
Because I didn't know if the "auto save" function actually overwrites the existing file (like "save as") or just saves changes to a buffer which is lost upon crash (like "save"), I decided to use the tedious but sure fire "save as" route. I suppose I could have tested the auto save feature to determine which way it saved the file, but to be honest I got tired of trouble shooting Ulead's buggy program and just went with what would allow me to finish my project. I'd promised a DVD to someone and I'd wrongly assumed it would take about as long to generate as it would with VS 7

I have a ATI Radeon 9550 AGP video card with 256M memory, Direct3D Selected instead of Open3D, Hardware Accelaration set to full, VPU recover on. I have 3.4 Ghz Pentium 4, running windows 2000.
I've defragmented my c: drive. My VS9 project files and data (pic/video) are on another partition on the same physical hard drive.
VS9 has been crashing by freezing the monitor and also switching off the monitor but leaving the CPU running.
Power Save is not enabled on my monitor.
It crashes when i'm putting a title on a pic or video or moving along the timeline.
Has anyone else encountered this?

Dark Screen Crash
Trevor,
I have not experienced the dark screen crash that you describe. I know that's not helpful, but I wanted to respond because I know how frustrating it is to wait for some kind of response on these boards and get only silence.
Do you only experience this problem with Ulead VS 9 or do you sometimes see it with other software (like graffics intensive games or other editing software)?
I know this does not really help with the specific problem at hand, but I'd probably look for a demo version of another video editing program and see if the problems persist. This might indicate a hardware or system problem. It would stink to spend a lot of time tracking down something you thought was Ulead specific only to find it was a bigger problem. Just a thought.

Hi Pete,
Thanks for your response. : )
I've tried other video editing stuff - I've used video studio 7 and 8 on this pc and the black screen issue hasn't ever happened before.
For some reason my vs8 puts vertical lines and horizontal lines on the mpeg that it produces so it makes that pretty unusable. VS7 has been great however it doesn't seem to cope with pictures from my digital camera (the pictures all appear pixelated in VS7).
VS9 is the only one without these issues but it just keeps crashing.
i suspect it's the graphics card interfacing with the program.
is there a way to disable it so that VS9 doesn't have these issues?
Thanks !!!

I've updated video drivers, defragged, re-installed, changed temp folders, etc. etc. and still crash during edits. Usually happens as I'm dragging the slider to a trim position, both in normal and in 'multi-trim' mode.
My opinion is that this software doesn't work very well (not at all), and I'm curious if I will be able to get my $99 back from Ulead. Fry's typically won't accept returned software.
Update: Dragging the error message to the side and continuing to work turns the crash into a minor annoyance. I completed a three hour project with no further issues, burned the DVD, and closed the program normally.

I didn't update the Radeon Drivers i have but i noticed that my screen problems (going black etc) were remedied when i turned off hardware acceleration (?) on the Radeon Control Panel. Though this means that i can't start the Radeon Control Panel anymore at all but atleast VS9 isn't crashing at anymore.
I may try updating the drivers and see if this helps.
