VS9 crashing in edit mode
When editing in 16:9 aspect ratio, video shot in 4:3 mode, VS9 occasionally crashes with error signature:
AppName: vstudio.exe
AppVer: 9.0.0.0
szModName: hungapp
szModVer: 0.0.0
Offset: 00000000
The crashes seems to occur when I have been doing something with a thumbnail in the library area. File sizes are usually about 2gb with frequent ‘crossfade’ transitions: all start-up applications disabled.
Very grateful for any advice re this.

Come on Ulead pull your finger out.
I have run VS8 since it was released with out a problem. I didn't want to upgrade to VS9 and leave 8 lying around so I brought a full boxed copy and installed that.
I have been running it for about 6 hours now trying to edit some vid and it has crashed no more that 8 times.
I have reverted to setting the auto save to ever 3 minutes.
It appears several people are having the same problem

I recently upgraded from VS6 to VS9. Now I'm having problems with VS9 crashing in edit mode also. Never had problems with VS6 on the same machine. I have about 80 clips in my project. After cropping a couple clips, VS9 crashes.
I was hoping Ulead would have a patch to fix reported issues. Put they have nothing for VS9. Now I find myself saving every 10 minutes so that I don't lose my edits. It's really frustrating.

Crash Crash Crash
2 places that VS9 crashes.
During edit mode as others seem to be experiencing. This exists gracefully (albeit VERY annoyingly). The problem seems to always occur during clipping of video and is preceeded by frantic disk activity before the crash. (It's becoming quite predictable!!)
I have 2 dedicated 7200rpm SATA 80Gb drives and they are defragged etc. regularly. Neither disk has a paging file - is this a possible cause? Should I set a large paging file on the dedicated video HDDs?
Also I am finding VS9 simply dropping out suddenly when trying to preview videos to bring into the library. The workround is to import the lot and delete thumbnails I don't need.

The same is happening to me but it is repeatable during the final render. After I spend time editing a video with a bunch of transitions then render it as a DVD MPG, I get a BSOD each time with a different error. When I do a fresh boot and close all my running tasks VS9 will render the video with no problems - just do some edits including viewing pieces of the project and when I render again I will get a BSOD every time.
I have the following configuration:
Intel 3ghz p4
1GB ram
130GB free hard drive space
The only program running in the system tray is Ghost 9 (which doesnt have a way to disable the process)

I got this repeatedly in Pinnacle Studio 9. I'm not looking forward to it in VideoStudio 9 that I've just ordered.
I got this early last year after a new system build. I tried various things, including changing memory boards (I had a pair spare). I don't know what fixed it, or it may have been a patch Pinnacle brought out, but it went away, and has just come back avter a new system buils.
ASus P5AD2-E premium, P4 Prescott 3.4gb , 2gb Corsair ram (actual chip brand unkown). ATI X800 graphics. 3 x SATA Western digital hard drives.
Soundblaster Audigy (cheap one)

I am also experiencing very frequent crashes during edit
I've used VS 5,6,7 and now 9. For me, 7 has definitely been the most problem free. I recently rebuilt my computer and upgraded to Video Studio 9. I'm very familiar with the interface and am fairly confident that the program is installed and configured correctly.
Thus far, I've had no problems capturing video via either my ATI allinwonder 9600XT or from my Canon miniDV camera via firewire. I've had some of the problems with the rendering/compression ("not enough space on disk") others have mentioned when trying to "create disk", but I can work around them (shouldn't have to, but I can and do).
The biggest and most debillitating problem is the rediculous frequency of crashes I experience when editing. I found it very difficult to believe that others were experiencing the same problem and that ULEAD hasn't issued a patch or workaround. Heck, at this point even an acknowledgement that there is a problem would be nice.
As I've noted above, I've been working with different versions of Ulead Video Studio for a long time and I'd hate to have to go a different route, but this product is simply becoming unworkable. If I have to save anything I do every one or two steps I make (and then experience the inevitable crash), this becomes too cumbersome to use.
I"m willing to wait a little while to see what ULEAD can come up with, but if I do jump ship it won't be with a tight lip...

Top Tip
Just discovered that although VS9 crashes pretty soon after starting my editing, if I leave the Error dialog on screen (and move it out of the way) I can carry on editing/saving etc. without VS9 actually closing.
This isn't the best solution in the world but it does mean that you can carry on working despite the error message!
Would be good if Ulead could correct the error in the first place though...

Pleased to say that this problem seems to have resolved on my PC by following the following advice from ULead. Step 3) re deleting folders is the only one I hadn't tried previously.
Not sure what was the cause of the crashes. Two possibilities:
(a) I am running ULead PhotoExplorer 8.5SE and had found that this could cause problems with VS9 if installed after VS9 (my earlier posting on this forum);
(b) I did not have the boxed version of VS9. I downloaded the trial version of VS9 before buying the full version on line.
Did anyone else having this problem follow either of these routes?
Regards
RB
Advice from ULead:
Download the latest drivers for your display/video card.
Try the following steps.
[Steps]
1) Clean up temp files from\Start menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\Disk Cleanup.
2) Uninstall VideoStudio 9 from control panel Add/Remove programs
3) Delete following folders
=>C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio
=>C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SmartSound Software Inc
=>C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\My Documents\Ulead VideoStudio
=>C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\
4) Reinstall VideoStudio 9 again and all the components.
Be sure that DMA is enabled for IDE hard disks.
1. Control Panel: System: Hardware tab: Device Manager.
2. Click "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
3. Double click on Primary IDE Channel: Advanced settings.
4. Be sure Current transfer mode is DMA. (Transfer mode should be DMA if available in default.)
Download the latest version of DirectX and other necessary updates from Microsoft:

Seems like I can edit after the "crash"
Rowladar,
I've finally had a chance to determine whether I can continue editing after the error message window pops up and it looks like I can. I haven't tried to edit for a long time after the message, so I'm not sure if this is a short term or long term work around, but thanks for the "heads up". My anxiety levels are already dropping.
Now I'll try the ULead suggested fix reposted by Ron Beam. I'll report back here when I find out if it works for me.
In response to Ron Beam's questions: I installed a "boxed version" of Video Studio on a machine with a newly reformated HD running winXP pro. This was the first Ulead product this computer had seen. I did, however, load the version of Ulead Cool Studio 3D 3.0 included with the boxed edition of Video Studio 9.0 after the VS 9 install. I have no idea if this could have caused a problem, but I'm going to uninstall it before trying the "delete folders"/reinistall you suggested.
Pete
