no sound from imported audio file
VS11+,Firefox,XP Home.I have imported a WAV file from my hard drive ,it is 705bps and 99.7 kb, it plays in Windows Media Player but there is no sound when played in the music track.Initially I raised the vol to 200(it was to play with a file in the other sound track) as I could not hear it.It played once. Then, VS "encountered a prob and had to close" and the file has remained silent ever since. The wav file still plays in WMP. help please

Re: no sound from imported audio file
Hi Ken,
What does your WAV file show for the compression? For example when you go to import it to VS, in the Open Audio File dialog window there is a button called Info... Press it and it should open the Properties for that file. At the bottom of the Properties dialog is the Audio, the first entry is the Compression, for mine it shows PCM. You also get the same dialog when you right-click on the file in the timeline or library.
Audio View
Next with the audio file in the timeline, press the Speaker icon that is located in the upper-left of the timeline, adjacent to the Storyboard, Timeline icons. You should now see the wave-form for the audio file. Is it showing a wave-form? Also make sure that it is not muted. In the audio view, the musical note icon or the microphone, depending on which track you have the audio file on, should be highlighted, and the speaker icon to its right should not have the red circle with the diagonal line showing.

Re: no sound from imported audio file
I did what Ron suggested, used the timeline passed the end of the project to test it and it worked.......but now when i move the mouse pointer into the workspace it changes into a cross and will not operate anything.I restarted the PC but it is still the same, what is going on now.I also noticed that the original imported audio file in the mike track had gained a small square in it.
On trying to go back to the project it now will not open after restarting.

Re: no sound from imported audio file
Don't know why VS would all of a sudden start throwing such fits over a WAV file. What compression is being used for your audio file? You can actually have MP3, or MPEG-2 audio, in a WAV file.
The small square you're referring to, is it by chance one of the volume control points? Does the waveform show a red line running down the center?

Re: no sound from imported audio file
sorry Ron, I did not answer your questions in my rush to reply. It is PCM 22.050kHz 16 bit stereo. The little square I was talking about was in the top right corner of the file icon when it was not in audio view in the mike track of the timeline. The error report mentioned WER.241.dir00\videostudio exe.mdmp and ditto 00appcomp.txt.So I did a disc clean up and then the file imported again into where the first file had been deleted from and worked with the mouse behaving ok.But as I am tryping this
another need to close message has come up.Perhaps I should forget about using this file

Re: no sound from imported audio file
Something you could try, that may (or may not) help...
In a new project, drop that audio file in. Then go to Share>Create Sound File. In the Audio Save options dialog, press the Options button, and go to the Compression tab. Change the Attributes from the 22.050kHz to 44.100kHz. See if that will help VS to play it correctly.
You could do the same using a third-party audio editor like Audacity.

Re: no sound from imported audio file
Ifollowed Rons advice, under options it was showing 44.100kHz 16 bit stereo ,microsoft wav file, the compression tab shows the same attributes. The file had sound.So.........I did not alter anything but it now works.Have I got a special unique PC and copy of VS , does this sort of event only happen to me or are there other members of this community that suffer the same afliction.

Hi Ken V
Glad you managed to sort the wav problem.
Your not on your own suffering the editing affliction if that makes you feel better.
I have many strange things going on that I cannot explain, it may be the computer the program or just me.
Out of interest, using Windows Explorer, rename the original problem Wav file, giving it another name.
Then import that to Video Studio.

I am confused. This "square" is also on the audio clip? This could mean you have a filter applied to the audio clip.As the square I was talking about was on video clips too i have worked out it is the reusult of increasing the brigthness of a clip

Re: no sound from imported audio file
Well, all I can say Jeff is that if you are confused there is absolutely no hope for me!Does it help if I say that that I did not try to place the filter there, VS did with out me asking (at least I know that is not supposed to happen).I did say that what is on the other end of this keyboard is unique.
Thanks for the info Trevor I will rename the file as you advised.

So you are saying there was an audio filter applied? Does removing the filter fix your problem?

Re: no sound from imported audio file
To clarify, the representation of a filter or what ever it was showing on the audio file file in the timeline, looked exactly the same as what happens in a video file after I have increased the brightness via colour correction.Have just tried to replicate
this (have deleted the original file from the timeline).) in case it happened after increasing the volume but nothing untoward happened. At no time did I try to use an audio filter.
Having gone through all this, on starting up the PC just now and trying it again.........it seems to be working fine now and
VS has not asked to close whilst I am typing this.Thank you to evert one for your help

Re: no sound from imported audio file
That is because you are adding a filter if you are applying color correction. It is just not applied in the same way as the other filters are.To clarify, the representation of a filter or what ever it was showing on the audio file file in the timeline, looked exactly the same as what happens in a video file after I have increased the brightness via colour correction.
I still think you had a filter applied to your audio clip, whether it was intentionally put there or not.

Re: no sound from imported audio file
I realise the colour correction is a filter but did not realise until now that any type of filter, audio or video produced the same icon(if that is the correect term) on the clip in the timeline. When i initially described this icon I did not realise what it was but you sussed that, this is a few more degrees on my learning curve. There is no way I could have placed the audio filter there though, have not used an audio filter for years.Which reminds me I could use one now(the file was the sound of a car horn)
