Hi. I'm doing a lot of PiPs recently and I noticed that whenever I put a transition on a clip or image on the overlay track, it affects the whole frame. To be more precise, for example I put a transition on a clip that was placed on the 3rd overlay track and only takes up 1/4 of the screen. The transition will work but it will also affect the whole frame instead of just the 1/4 size of the screen just like the clip that it follows. I noticed that a transition will work regardless of its screen size and overlay track rank (meaning the 4th transition will affect the clips below it but won't touch what's on the 5th & 6th overlay tracks).
Is there a work around so that the transition will work "independently" so that it only affects the particular clip in the same particular size of the clip it leads/precedes on that particular overlay track it was supposed to affect rather than the whole frame/screen?
I hope I'm clear about the description. Thank you in advance.

Hi
I see what you mean, some transitions affect the full screen others just affect the clip.
This has been posted before, doing a search may find the post, I don’t have time at the moment.
One transition, the arrows only affect the clip…..
However your overlay work seems to extend the transition into the clips above, where they overlap.
Very strange, don’t think this problem has been mentioned before.
You may have to render the project in stages to avoid this.
Have you tried using the P-in P filter.
Have you tried using the Instant Projects to create similar effects. Pin P

Hi trevor andrew,
Yes, I did the PinP by Newblue but the project I'm currently working on deals with the color graphics, and I opted not to use PinP simply because it's a bit time-consuming to keyframe everything. I am using the overlay tracks coz it's easier to resize the color graphics.
I am afraid to render my projects in stages because of quality loss, and there are images that have transparent properties that can't be fixed with chroma key in later stages because of the similar colors of other clips (like black background, black hair, dark eyes) will suffer also.
As for the Instant Projects, I actually simulated how the clips behave in Instant Projects, and I adjusted some properties to fit my needs (i.e. transitions).
I also tested the Arrow transitions but I suffered the same fate as with the other transitions.
I probably should have done this on my earlier post, but here's a screenshot. For the meantime, I will find the other post that you mentioned regarding this topic. Thank you.

In the screenshot, you can see that the red clip is ahead of the blue clip that is placed on the overlay track1. The transition is placed before the blue clip. I wanted the transition to work only on that particular area of the frame that the blue clip occupies, but it affects the whole screen.

Re: work around to make transitions in overlay tracks work i
This is a know problem with certain transitions used in overlay tracks. About the only ones that work correctly in overlay tracks are the fades. There are some others for example those in the Wipe category. They will not affect the lower tracks.
Now looking at your screenshot you're not transitioning between two clips. This is a little different. I've also noticed the same thing when using a transition placed at the start or ending of a clip, that has no other clip preceding or following it. I think VS treats it as the only clip in the timeline. In this case the Fades do not work as you would think. I agree that it should not use the entire timeline, but for now that's what happens. While beta-testing, I brought this to Corel's attention, but they apparently don't see it as a bug, or choose to ignore it.

Re: work around to make transitions in overlay tracks work i
UPDATE: I forgot to mention that this phenomenon also happens with titles.

Ron P., I also noticed that the fades affect the entire frame when I tested it with the titles. I also tested placing a transition between two clips and although it produced interesting effects, it did not achieve what I wanted. (see attached photo below)

Thank you for your insight. Maybe VSXP5 will include a "fix" or workaround for this. After all, they didn't overlook the function of putting transition in the overlay tracks.
