Re: Missing Video
WK: Not to continue on re the proxy files, but a while back I learned that Corel VS automatically makes them and puts them in the Corel folder and because I didn't know this, they just kept building up, huge HD files, to the point my projects were crashing all the time and things would happen like black video. Anyway, just mentioning it in case you haven't looked there and deleted them.
My apologies if you already know this.

Hi Candy
As you seem to be having problems using Smart Proxy I assume you have Disable Smart Proxy
Go to Settings-Smart Proxy Manager-Settings.
I uncheck the option to Enable Smart Proxy, proxy files will no longer be created.
And my apologies if you have already done this……

Re: Missing Video
And further to Trevor's advice, the proxy files are only generated if the clips are of a certain size or larger. Those settings can also be found in Preferences. Not to continue on re the proxy files, but a while back I learned that Corel VS automatically makes them

Re: Missing Video
Jeff and Trevor, No apologies, I did not know about the Smart Proxy Manager. As you can tell, I basically bought ProX3 and started using it without knowing anything. Thanks - I went into the Manager and disabled Smart Proxies.
Appreciate your help.

Yes, I have installed some programs and codecs. The main one which might affect this would be the DivX Plus player and associated items/codecs. The problem is I don't know the exact sequence of events, it was several months ago. I thought I had installed DivX prior to VS not working.
Since I have more than one computer, I decided to load VS on another computer and copy my files over. The result of this is that everything seems to work fine on this different computer. I think this would support your theory of something being loaded on my first computer which is not compatible with VS. I have no idea of how to go about finding out what it might be. Any suggestions? Maybe I will delete the DivX stuff I downloaded. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
I appreciate all the help

Re: Missing Video
To everyone
So I deleted the DivX player and all associated items. The result is that now VS works fine and plays my video clips and projects.
Did I miss something that I should have known and just stumble into a problem? Any way, I am glad to have it working again. I find the world of codecs etc. a dark and scary place.
Thanks for all the help, I very much appreciate it. I hope someone else benefits from highlighting these problems.

Hi WK Adams
Great news
I was just writing a reply with some other options, no need now
Surprised that Div X is the culprit, I would suspect the other associated items.
Never mind at least you are working again…………

Re: Missing Video
So the reason I was playing around with DivX was to facilitate sharing. I am working on a family project and wanted to share the video with other members who were going to narrate the clips. None of them have VS. I load the files on a server that I have which they can access. When I loaded .avi files, most of them couldn't play them on any of their players. I was looking for a solution to that problem.
Having said that, does anyone have a good suggestion for how to share projects in work. The solution I finally defaulted to was to save my projects as a .wmv files and load them to the server. Everyone seemed to be able to play those files. However, when they return the narration (audio file) I will continue to work with the .avi files in VS to combine the audio and video. Any better suggestion.

Re: Missing Video
Hi WK Adams
Thanks for the explanation, all makes sense now.
I think WMV is the best way to go as all Windows users will be able to play the video.
Low sized WMV being easier to upload/download.
I don’t know if duration is a problem or whether you create individual clips for each person,
Or simply create one file?
Some users have issues with MP3 audio, if you have problems use Wav.
Good luck

Re: Missing Video
Hi Treavor
Thanks for your input. I really appreciate it.
I am just making one file for each of my VS projects. The intent is that the WMV file represent the final video meaning I have added all the titles, transitions etc. This file is then loaded to my server and stays there until I remove it. All those I give access to the server can use the file and play it and/or download.
One of the things that doesn't seem to be working well either for me and other family members is getting a good audio file. We have been using audacity but I am not pleased with it. My intent was just to record to the computer and then I would take the audio file and put it into the project. In the past, I have also used a tape recorder and then used audacity to digitize the audio. This seem to work better that recording to the computer but still is not great. Do you have any experience making good audio files and have suggestions for me.
Thanks again for your time.

Re: Missing Video
To what format are you saving the Audacity sound file?
Assuming you have a camcorder you can use that to record your voice over.

Re: Missing Video
Hi WK Adams
I think the main problem would be the quality and type of mic used, not the program to create the file.
Unfortunately I know little about mic’s
I have had a lot of trouble, so much that I do little in the way of voice over.
Recording to the Camcorder as mentioned by Jeff gave the best audio, a long process when having to capture/download the video just to rip the audio.
An older Logitech “web cam” produced reasonable sound but would pick up any/all background noise, including the cooling fan on the pc, (must do something about that)
Recently I borrowed a Logitech desktop mic which seems to do a good job, although the finished audio always sounds like a “voice over”, if you know what I mean. But then my technique is little to be desired….
You have several of your family doing the voice over, who does the best quality, what are they using?
As for audio format I would use Wav.

Re: Missing Video
Jeff/Treavor/Bob
Thanks for the suggestions. I am saving my audio files as .wav. I had never thought of using my camera to record the sound. When I have a minute I will try that.
I have a new Logitech webcam/mic. Using that mic and audacity, I am getting pretty good results. Initially it sounds a little like I am in a tunnel. Using some of the post processing capability of audacity I have been able to take the tunnel effect out for the most part. I need to do a little more experimenting with the post processing.
Most of this work I am doing is old 8/16mm film with no sound track. I have the 8mm equipment to do stop frame capture and the post processing software to reconstitute back to movie which I save as .avi.
I think for the audio with a little more experimenting with audacity and post processing I will have a good solution.
Thanks again for the help. I hope I can return the favor sometime.
