Missing Video

Post by wkadams »

I am a user of Video Studio X2. I am having problems seeing video. When I open a project, it appears to open normally but when I play it, no video shows, just the sound. If I insert a video file onto the timeline, I get a message which says "Unable to open file" Below that is says "Catastrophic Failure" and in the lower left of the message it has the number [17101:70:2]. The exact same file will open and play normally in other players such as Windows Media Player. Any ideas??

Thanks for the help

Can you give us a clue -- any clue -- as to what format the video has or where it came from...? Otherwise we are just guessing blindly...

Oh sorry, what was I thinking, my bad. The files are .avi files. As I said, I can play them fine is Window Media Player, just not in VS. They were working fine about two months ago. Then I was getting back to some of my projects and they no longer work. Hope this gives you a clue. I really appreciate your willingness to help.

Again, thaqt doesn't really help either as 'avi' is just a wrapper extension and more than 800 quite different types of video call themselves .avi'. So please right click on one of the files, either in the VS timeline or library window, and copy ALL of its properties here please.

I attached a screen shot of the properties. Just in case you can't see the attachment here is the information.
File format Microsoft AVE Files
File Size 2,013,279KB
Frame Rate: 29.970 frames/sec
Duration: 571.905 seconds
Data Rate: 3512.11 kbps
Compression: DV Video Encoder -- type 2
Attributes: 24 bits, 720 x 480, 4:3
Total Frames: 17,140 frames(s)

nothing under audio

Thanks again for your help.

DV-AVI files usually give no problems whatsoever. Where did these clips come from? How did you get them into your computer?

These particulars files were captured from my video camera using video studio. I worked with them for several weeks with no problem. Then all of the sudden VS will no longer play them.

Thanks

Hi Ken and Black Lab: I have had this no video problem in the middle of the timeline previously and again tonight using Pro X3. I am working with big HD files captured from Canon VIXIA HV30 HDV. I am desparate to get this project done. Anyway, I think I just solved it. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. I went into "Accessories/System Tools/Disc Cleanup and selected Temp files. I had 6 GB of them! I deleted those. Then I went into ProX3 folder and deleted the proxy files, about 5 of them for this project, each 4-5 GB each, and now the project works, no more black video.

Ken or Black Lab, can you explain what the proxy file is or does?

Hope my solution helps. Am interested in any feedback from Ken or Black Lab.

Proxy files are used when editing HD. They are lower quality (i.e. smaller) files that are generated and used for editing/previewing. When you Share your project those edits of the proxy files are then applied to the actual HD files.

After I deleted the proxy files I was able to continue to work on the project fine, the video that was black came back. Then I created a WMF file and loaded on YouTube. Can you explain how that worked if I deleted the proxy files? Your explanation seems like it means you have to have the proxy files to edit and share.

Thanks for your answers, appreciate it.

You don't have to use proxy files if your computer is powerful enough to handle the HD files.

Jeff: Thanks for this info. Tonight with large HD file on another project I was having jerky playback and slow loading of the file. Decided to delete the proxy and that solved it.

Hi WK Adams

As Jeff said earlier DV-Avi video does not normally give any problems, in fact its probably the easiest format that VS uses.

If it worked in the past, what have you changed on your computer.
Have you installed any programs?
Have you installed any Codec packs?
