Purpose of the Free Trial?

Purpose of the Free Trial?
With all the free players and codecs for standard DVDs, it seems to me that the only reason someone would purcahse WinDVD is for blu-ray playback or upscaling options. So, what is the point of a free trial if you don't allow blu-ray playback or upscaling during the trial?
