VS X4 File format mismatch: .FLV and .dvr-ms files?!

Post by Turbo »

Have searched.
Bought VideoStudio X4 Pro a few days ago to replace Windows Movie Maker and I have found some bugging issues, one of which is the program won't let me open .flv (youtube downloads) or .dvr-ms(PVR, recorded TV) files??!
Yet Windows Movie Maker opens these files no problem!

Help needed please!!!

When I try to open a .flv file a Open Video File box pops up saying:
Unable to open file [...Name of file...].
File format mismatch.
[16803:1:2]

When I try to open a .dvr-ms file the first Corel VideoStudio Pro box pops up saying:
These files cannot be added to this project.
These files may be of unknown file format, the computer does not have enough memory or the file is copyright protected.
D:\recorded tv\File Name.dvr-ms

Click OK, the second Corel VideoStudio Pro box that pops up says:
File format mismatch.

Welcome to the forums, :)

Thank you for completing System information in your Profile.

FLV is flash video file format, and can not be edited in VS. It is one of the file formats that you convert to or render your project to. It is meant to be streamed or viewed on computers. So VS is behaving correctly when it will not accept it for editing.

How are you trying to insert the DVR-MS files? Have you tried using the Insert Digital Media, or pressing the Capture/Record button (red circle and film reel) above the timeline? The video files contained in this wrapper format are MPEG-2, but it has other meta-data, one being Copy Protection. So if you recorded a television show that has copy protection, this will be read by the editing programs, and will be rejected. It does allow for playback, but no editing.

Yes you can drop SWF (which was originally Shockwave Flash, or Small Web Format) files into VS. Those are completely different than FLV. SWF files are based more on Vector graphics. There are some FLV editors on the market. To locate one do a google search for FLV editors.

Cheers mate,

When I try to open .dvr-ms files I go to, File > Insert Video File to Timeline / Library > Insert Video...

Are Corel able to make a patch/update with the correct codecs to be able to edit .flv files in VS X4?? As they are able to save in a .flv format. If they do that would be awesome!!

They might be able to, but I really don't see the need to do so. Why? Because FLV and the latest F4V are merely container formats. Some of the codecs used are Sorenson and H.263. For more information read the wikipedia page about the FLV format:

You ask why would anyone want flv files? Because flv is a format you will find with youtube files. It would be useful if you could edit these files for the no.1 thing a lot of people would consider using this program for.

FLV is a container, that so far utilizes only a couple of codecs. These codecs are readily available in other formats within VS. Such as MOV, MPEG-4. If you want to edit FLV, convert it to some other format. In order to download YouTube videos, you need to use some other program/utility anyway, and some, if not most of those, provide you with the conversion ability. I've managed to convert them to MPEG-4 and VS accepts them.

As well, FLV and most of the more compressed file types were designed to be viewed, not edited. That is why so many editors have problems with them, or simply can't accept them at all.

hello everyone. I am new to the forums and this is my first post. I to am having issues with 'File format mismatch' and also 'Invalid file format' being displayed on screen when trying to upload video footage. I am using a Samsung HMX-H104 HD camcorder. this apparently records in H.264 HD format and the audio files are AAC. This means very little to me! I have been using VS Pro X4 with no problems with Windows Vista OS. Due to computer death, I know have a new computer with Windows 7 Home Premium and my camcorder or Pro X4 doesn't like it at all. I have been in touch with Samsung who seemed to think that it was a driver issue and took pleasure in telling me that their were no new drivers being produced for my camcorder. Great1 I have tried a variety of ways in extracting the video footage....SD card to Pro X4, SD card to computer, renaming the file. Also using the camcorder as a external drive and using the internal SSD drive....all with no success. i keep on getting either one of the two errors as meantioned above. If anyone can shed any light on this predicament, i will be eternally grateful. The situation is driving me up the wall....Thanks :(

Hi

And welcome to the forums

You may have been better to start a new post as your particular files have nothing to do with the FLV types mentioned above, however it does mention File Mismatch.

How are you inserting the files to Video Studio?

1 / First import the files from your cameras memory card to your pc (SD card to computer)
If you have camera software/program then use that to export the files from camera to PC.
Are you able to do that?
The files are saved to a folder on your PC’s hard drive.

2 / Open Video Studio , right click the timeline and select “Insert Video”
Browse the hard drive for your video files.

At what point do you have problems…………..

I am just thinking out loud here, but am wondering if it has something to do with the combination of h.264 AVCHD video and AAC audio. The latter has, of course, been around for some time and is part of both the mpeg-2 and mpeg-4 international standard. However, while AVCHD is of course mpeg-4, it is a special flavour of mpeg-4 and normally is associated with Dolby audio...

So I am wondering if you in fact installed any associated software which may have come on a CD with the camcorder. If it worked with Vista, it will probably work with Windows 7. And it would install any special codec that Samsung may have developed for the video/audio combination the camera films in. (Samsung camcorders which film in mpeg-4 as opposed to AVCHD have also been known to cause problems in VS in the past, and I am talking here about X3 rather than X4...)

Hi Trevor
I pretty much covered the things you meantioned in my original post. I know how to insert the videos into the software, as i said I was using it previously without any problems. To recap briefly;

1. Samsung say it is a "driver" issue, which are not available for Windows 7.
2. In Windows Vista everything worked perfectly. However I know have Windows 7 (pre-installed - no discs)
3. I cannot transfer videos at all now because of 'File format mismatch' and 'Invalid file format' being indicated on screen.
4. The Smasung software (which I didn't meantion) doesn't work either.

The problem appears to be between the camcorder and Windows 7, hence needing drivers.
I am here to see if anyone has had similar problems and that maybe, just maybe it might be a compatability issue with Video Studio Pro X4 and Windows 7. If this isn't the case. i am looking for other suggestions before having to to take the drastic measure of installing Vista or purchasing another camcorder.

Regards

.dvr-ms and .FLV are currently not supported by VS X4 when you import or edit it using VS X4. You can only output your video as an FLV.

You can visit http://corel.force.com/index/articles/e ... dio-Pro-X4, for the complete list of supported file format of VS X4 for both input and output.

Hi Ken

Thanks for your comments. I can assure you that no seperate Samsung software has been installed via a CD, because I didn't receive any,

However, if you connect the camcorder directly to the computer via USB lead, there is a software program called 'Inteli-studio' that is contained within. This is a pretty basic software and has not been used. there was no conflict with this whilst using in the Vista OS.

I took a look at it briefly but dismissed it. because of the unknown conflict that I know have. i tried the Intelli-studio to see if this would resolve matters in Windows 7 OS. It didn't work either. The same 'File format mismatch' and 'invalid file format' are present here too.
