Old version (MF2): freezing during video conversion problem

Post by johnnie_088 »

Hello :)
I'm really hoping that I can find some help here - I know many of you have moved on to much later versions of DVD Movie Factory, I still have MF2 which I've been using almost trouble-free since 2007. Only today am I experiencing problems with it.
I'll try to describe the problem as fully as I can. I use Movie Factory to record high quality from digital TV and write the files to DVD, and I usually split them over two or three discs as the files are so big. The file I am currently trying to make a DVD with is 11.2GB or three and a half hours long. I have prepared the first section which is 4.1GB/1 hr 15mins, with 16 chapters and menu screens. I have ample hard drive space and disc space to complete the DVD write. But the writing process has failed five times now today. At the initial "converting videos..." stage, the bar will get to a maximum of 65% before doing nothing for about 15 minutes (though the computer still looks like it's busy doing something), then a "Ulead Movie Factory has encountered a problem and needs to close" error message will appear. I have tried un- and re-installing the program and installing the update pack 2.12, without success. (Although the update does cure the problem of white text turning to black on my menus, but strangely it's now showing the amount of disc space needed wrongly, it was 4.1GB it's now 1.2!)
I know that technical support for my older version is not generally available now, but I'm hoping the above problem might ring bells with someone and they might be able to suggest something. Any help would be so appreciated. :)

Welcome to the forums, :)

DVD MF2, since 2007? I first started using DVD MF in 2005, and at that time it was DVD MovieFactory 4 Disc Creator, you must have found a yard sale back then.. ;)

Generally if the program has problems in the same place during a render, it is having a problem with what is located at that time place. Sometimes it's a transition, or it could be an audio file. I know Ulead's products, VS, and DVD MF, have had problems with MP3 audio tracks, especially those that use the Lame codec. So the recommendation would be to convert the MP3 files to WAV.

What type of video clips are you using? With such an old program, it's not going to recognize MPEG-4, or many of the other more modern compression technologies. I would think that you're using MPEG-2, DVD Compliant video files. Are they captured to your PC in MPEG-2 format, or have you edited them in some program, then created the video files that you now want to burn to DVD? The reason I'm asking, is that if the original source clips are say, DV (avi), the field order must be Lower Field First, and this must stay this way, even when you create your MPEG-2 clips. However if the original source, when they first started life, was MPEG-2, then the field order can be Upper Field First, again this must be maintained throughout. It might be possible that you have reversed some settings and DVD MF is choking on them, especially if you combined 2 clips having different field orders. You can have different clips in your DVD project, but you can not combine them into one clip/title.
