Making A Blend with 2 Images

Post by rmac816 »

Im having problems blending photos together. Here are the steps that Im doing.

1. click on file+new+select image dimensions.
2. select images
3. click on first image hit selections, then select all
4. click edit, paste as new selection

once it paste, the picture is huge, how do I resize it to make it fit on the canvas I selected.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, now I wish I had finished my Edit menu tutorial last night I could just give you a link to the video. XD Oh well.

1) You don't need to do "Select All" when copying one image to another. Copy will copy the currently selected layer in its entirety.

2) Paste as selection is great if you want to defloat the selection and have it merge with the background. But, in your case, it's usually best to past as a new layer. I say this for two reasons. 1) A new layer is independent of the other layers so you move it, resize it, effect its opacity, change it's blend mode, and change bits and pieces without effecting anything else in the image. 2) Not all images are the same size, so copying a larger image into a smaller one is very hard to deal with, by keeping it on its own layer we can properly resize.

3) You can resize the layer in one of three ways.

FIrst options is you can use the "Pick Tool" (shortcut key of "K") with a mode of "Scale" set and zoom out until you can see the resize handles and drag it in. While useful I don't like to use this method if I'm importing a larger image into a smaller one. Move & Pick Tools Tutorial video

The second option is to make a new layer yourself first, do "Select All" from the selections menu and then "Paste Into Selection" from the edit menu. "Paste Into Selection" resizes the image to fit inside the selection area. Again I don't like this method because if the images have a different aspect ratio the one you paste it could get very distorted.

The third option, and my favorite method, is to resize the image before copying and pasting it. Before you copy the first image go to the "Image" menu and select "Resize" Change the width and height to fit inside your new image dimensions. Hit OK. It should do it's best to resize and keep the aspect ratio. Once it's resized go ahead and "Copy" and "Paste as New Layer" again pasting as new layer because of the flexability layers give you.
