I have learned a lot about compression. Here is what I found:
1. in VS X3 for AVCHD hybrid discs, I select the option AVCHD 1920 for rendering. What happens is that the MPEG Optimizer window has been opening by default, and I have been just clicking OK. What this does is lower the rate from the set 18000 down to the "optimal" rate of 16000. All I have to do, is when the MPEG Optimizer opens, is just click cancel and I get the 18000 rate by default. Later when burning the disc in MF7SE its easy to up the rate from 16000 to 18000 in the properties.
Again, currently the camera is set to record at 17000 mbps.
2. In VS X3 for BluRay discs, I render as BluRay MPEG-2 and it defaults to 25000, whereas the highest setting on the camera is 24000. Go to burn in MF7SE and the default is 35000 for MPEG2. I would probably slow this down as some people said there might be a problem with some BluRay players being able to play these "burned" discs as opposed to "pressed" discs. To me 25000 should be enough.
3. I see that if I select render as BluRay H.264 it defaults to 20000. MF7SE for H264 is 25000. So I see where Natal is saying that if I went this route I would see degredation. This this is where Corel needs to step up and improve.
Is there really any difference to rendering as MPEG2 as compared to H.264? I know a lot of people say that H.264 is the newer and better format. With MPEG2 will my video be as good as it is in the camera?

AVCHD is more efficiently compressed than mpeg-2, so to get the same quality you need a higher bit rate if using mpeg-2 for your discs.
