Minimum hard drive speed for video capture?

Post by jparnold »

I am hoping someone can tell me if a Sata hard disk drive of 5400rpm allows successful capture of video via Firewire.
I checked the boxes which v10+ and Pro X3 but they do no state this.

I am contemplating purchasing a notebook which has a Sata HDD of 5400rpm and Intel Pentium Centrino Duo (dual core 1.83GHz) - the CPU should be fine I think but what about the HDD? I think that when I first started video editing (VS v 6 I think) that I only had a 5400rpm drive and had no problems but just wanted to be sure. Oh yes the notebook does have a firewire port.

Thanks

You will be fine, just ensure not too many other services are running at the same time.

Hello jparnold,

Just like what Skier mention, you should be able to capture video via firewire.. without any problem. As always make sure that you do not run too many programs at the same time or run in the background.

Thanks for the advice.
I never run otherapplications while capturing video if I can help it. I was just concerned that with a speed of 5400rpm (my desktop hdd is 7200rpm) that it may not be fast enough to write data and keep up with the input.
Thanks again

Firewire and DV are very forgiving. I used to capture DV when I first started video editing 8 years ago, using an old PIII Dell running at 1 GHz and 2 GB of RAM with Windows ME as the operating system. The HDD speed was also 5400 rpm, and it worked just fine...

Thanks Ken,
I remember when I first started using VS (v6 I think which came bundled with a Firewire add on card) that my system was quite slow by comparison with what I have now but could not remember how fast (or slow) it was and what the HDD speed was.
It is interesting the minimum specs recommended by Ulead/Corel for each version but I guess that is mainly to do with easy of editing rather than just capture. And they never seem to specify minimum hard drive speed so (I guess) it is not all that important.
I note that you have moved from the ACT.
