Hi,
Does anyone know if it's possible to use hardware MPEG encoder in Share phase of VideoStudio?
I would like to capture from camcorder in DV and edit in original format.
Saving later to MPG or DVD is very time consuming. Using hardware encoder could possibly make it a lot faster.

Use hardware encoder in Share phase

It depends on what hardware you have.
I have an ADS Tech Instant DVD (USB 2.0) mpeg encoder. I can export a dv .avi from my hard drive out to an analog-to-dv converter (and vice versa, with pass-through). Then send an analog signal (I use S-Video) from the converter to the Instant DVD and capture the mpeg2 stream back onto the computer.
This used to be great a couple of years ago. But mpeg encoders have gotten better, and computers have gotten faster. So, you could just encode using a software encoder like CinemaCraft Basic or MainConcept's Standalone mpeg encoder -- depending on your computer power, you might be able to do better than realtime for a single pass encode.

Thanks for your reply, George!
I do not have a HW encoding card yet. All of them seem to support realtime capturing, but I havent found one that could speed up MPEG rendering after editing in VS.
I did some research and found an article in Google answers:
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=298701
I concluded that hardware accelerated video editing is luxury of more expensive software/hardware suites like Adobe Premiere or Pinnacle Studio (I found a HW/SW bundle priced at $1100). That's way over my budget for just editing home movies.

Actually adobe premier uses the MainConcept Plugin to perform Mpg2
capturing and rendering available as a plugin from the mainconcept's
website.($249.00)
Adobe Premier isn't a mpeg editor. It doesn't natively support mpg2 editing.
You need to pay for an add-on/plug-in/hardware card & software.
AND, Dobly audio is also another plugin usually on top of the Mpg2
editing/capturing plugin.
DV is the best video picture and color.
You can customize VS9's MainConcept encoder to perform very deep
pixel searching and quantization by enabling the "Advanced" tab in the
compression settings. These are the same settings as the expensive
plugin for premier (mainconcept encoder). The main difference is
being able to set the "Maximum bit_rate / Average / and lowest bit_rates).
That has it's limitations in VS9. Not a problem though.
Can't beat VS9 for the price. Great product.
I use to perform all my encoding at night. Export and start encoding, then
go to bed. Wake-up and it's done. Or, start long encodes before leaving
for work.
If your concerned about the machine being on set it to go automatically
into hiberation or suspend when idle.
Hope this helps,
