cannot insert mp4 digital camera file into corel videostudio

Post by eileen »

I have tried to insert a mp4 video file into the timeline and it just does not see the file and if I navigate to it and try open it does nothing

I have download all patches
This videostudio pro x3 came loaded on the laptop
the mp4 file is from a olympus sp-800 us - I took it from the sd card and put it in a folder on the hard drive

I read all the things people have written
I am not at the point of trying to create file
I can not import the file at all

After spending hours on this, I am at my wits end
Looking for expert help here please

Hi Eileen

Welcome to the forums.

How are you trying to insert the video file?

Right click the timeline and select Insert Video
Browse your hard drive to select one of your video files.

Or
Browse the hard drive.
Select your video, drag and drop to timeline.

Does that work?

There are many forms of mp4 video files and some don't appear to work with VS. I had some the other day from a customer and I just could not get VS to see them, so a quick conversion to wmv and I was away. These files fo mine were from a phone.

Ok, so you are telling me there isn't a fix in Corel but the user must manipulate the file to a different file extension in order to use the file in the Corel Video software

Corel knows their software is broken. The user must work around that. Correct?

OK, I will try that
There were a number of people who suggested opening and saving in another file format - I did use Window Video and save as a wmv file and could import that but did not try anything because I was sure reading all the patches that Corel had a fix somewhere for their software

OK, a broke product but a work around maybe
Thanks for your input

I don't work for Corel, but have a fair understanding of video and it's workings in a whole variety of editing programmes.
To try to help your understanding.
Programme makers have to try to keep up with ever changing file formats.
Each computer that the programme is installed on is different so reacts in a different way.
MP4 has a variety of ways in which it can be made, each programme has to try and work with all of them. Talke .avi for example, there are well over 800 different forms this can come in, that's a lot of work to ensure you get each one to work properly.
MP4 is based on the mov format, this is Apples equivalent of windows .avi,
Each hardware manufacturer, preferring you to stick with their products may tweak the mp4 format to suit their needs, which adds more problems.

It's not really a broken product.

Hi Eileen

As Graham has said there are many types of MP4 video files using a variety of properties.
The camera manufacturers will probably create another flavour tomorrow, unfortunately they don’t tell the designers of the “video editing software” leaving them to play catch-up.
It would be ideal if Olympus were to provide some editing software, or have they?
Some do provide video viewers/converters allowing you to convert the original to a more suitable format for editing.
Unfortunately they will continue to sell products knowing there may be a problem with video editing.

However your video files may be standard and should be opening without problems, Is it a Corel issue or your PC?

Your camera probably came with some software, this may include the correct codecs to play and edit your MP4 video.
So have you installed the software that came with the camera?

Have you tried using another computer to open the MP4 files?

If you have a small video file (MP4) you can e-mail to me and I will see if I can open it.
My e-mail is within My Quick Guides

Hi Eileen

I had no problems in inserting and opening your video file using Video Studio X3, sound also ok.
Looks like an Intermediate Egret to me.
Only short but plays ok in both Clip and Project modes

These are the properties I found…….

I don't understand why

Ok, using same video clip
I open video studio pro
go to timeline
rt clk
insert video
navigate to video
It doesn't see any videos or files (dialog box)
I drop down menu to ALL Files
navigate to video again
it puts name in file field
when I click open - it sits there dumb and happy to do nothing

Hi

Your Video Studio being pre-installed with the laptop may well be an SE version.
I don’t know the exact difference to the full versions only that it may be cut down and not fully functional.
Do you know if it is an SE version?
I would imagine though that its associated with H264, or the lack of it.

Some options…….
1 / Download the trial version of Video Studio X4, does that work correctly?

2 / Use another program to convert the video, “Super” is used by many on the forum.
At least you now know the properties of the original video giving you the sizes to use when converting.

3 / Did you install the software that came with the camera?

I don't remember any software with the camera but will look for it - no manual - that was softcopy on the camera

Although I have changed computers about 5 or 6 times over the last year that I have owned the camera (kept taking them back 4 one reason or another) Love Costco

I bring my photos and videos into the computer from the sd card and not directly from the camera via Adobe Bridge because the interface is most organized

The about page
Video Studio Pro X3
with the patches I installed brought it up to 13.6.2.69 level
copyright is 2009

Ok, this is going to have to be on hold for about a week because others things again are taking priority starting Friday

Could you send me that clip as well, I'd be interested in whether I can play it, as I have trouble with some.
Which version of quicktime do you have installed?
