Yes I did, and it's all jibberish to me.
Sorry. Isn't there some sort of patch to fix this, the last time I (Norton help centre to be more precise) played around with registrys it buggered up my machine, so I don't wanna go around playing with the registrys.

Sorry for being total N00b but I wasn't expecting my video files to be a problem with a paint programme.

You don't need to "#####" with your registry. Read the message posted here May 13. It is a bug. The "team" is working on it. As you are a "noob" you will need to read each message carefully. It's all fully explained as to where the fault comes from. We'll have to wait and monitor the Corel website and maybe this board to await a "fix."

New important info

I just upgraded the k-lite codec package on my machine. CODECs are coders-decoders that are used to encode and/or decode audio and video.
I always upgrade and install EVERYTHING (all updates) I need on a machine before I install any software whatsoever. This makes for a great restore point as well a troubleshooting start.
This recent upgrade enhanced codecs as well as media player classic (which moved to version 1.5.0.2827.) This upgrade seems to have repaired this crazy mp4 problem.
I would like to see somebody upgrade their media player classic only and report here what happens. Then try the entire k-lite upgrade package upgrade and report back. I will see if I can flush-re-install PSP it's four upgrades then see what happens (if upgrade three still creates the problem.) Corel reports that this problem occurs after the 3rd upgrade. Good luck.

I'll just add that it is risky to install codec packs. They are thrown together with regard to quantity not quality. The codecs may conflict with other codecs within the pack, let alone ones already installed on your system. K-lite has been know to cause problems with video editing applications, such as VideoStudio. It is best to install a codec if needed, not full codec packs.

I would not invite, or encourage anyone to take the risk of messing up their system.

The above quote came from a one time member, who is an engineer, and well versed with video.

First of all:
Corel MESSED up my system not the codec package.
second:
reinstalling the latest codec pack fixed COREL's problem.

Thanks for the detailed information in this thread.

I just experienced this problem too when I went to copy an mp4 file ... corel install kicks off (WTF) cancel cancel ... eventually ends. I recently upgraded to the Pro X3. The unwanted install was kind enough to ask me for my feedback ... I wasn't too polite. My apologies to Corel who receive my rant.

Went searching and found this thread.

I thought if I had disabled the mediacatalog.exe this wouldn't happen ( renamed it) but the mp4 error still occurs. How do you remove the assoc from the cataloger? Where are the thumbnails kept?

I'm not sure if this will help, but I had the same Error 1706 (can't find PSPPro.msi) whenever I tried to manually open and play an mp4 video. The Corel install program would pop up every time. I completely uninstalled Corel Paint Shop Photo Pro X3. Rebooted. Ran CCleaner to fix any possible registry errors. Reinstalled Corel Paint Shop Pro X3. Ran the update utility until there were no further updates (twice). Rebooted. Tested the program and it loaded and performed normally. I then proceeded to manually open and play another mp4 video with Windows Media Player. Success! There was not a trace of the former Corel installer Error 1706. What a relief!

I see there is an update from 2011-09-05. I have solved my problem already, but, will still install this one.
Has anybody else checked this recently?

Wow! I installed this fifth PSP X3 upgrade. There's a whole bunch of new Python libraries. Looks like I was correct in my first assumption.
