HDD speed

Post by erdna »

Has somebody ever experienced significant HD (HDV,AVCHD) rendering speed performance changes when using faster disk configurations (Raid0,SSD) as opposed to the standard two SATA 7200rpm disk setup?

I've done very little HD editing, but I can't say I noticed any difference to SD editing with a raid set up and 10,000rpm discs!

Hype notwithstanding, SSD's for consumer use are highly overrated. Yeah, if you put your OS on one, your computer will boot faster, but how often do you boot your system each day, and long does it take to boot in the first place? Hard-core gamers will see a difference, too. Otherwise, it's a lot of cost with very little benefit. If you have some money to burn, get more memory or a faster CPU, either of which will give you much more bang for the buck (or euro, or whatever). SSD's are about marketing and bragging rights, not about real-world performance.

Agree UncleBoo, and SSD don't seem to be reliable when they need frequent read/writes.
Thanks skier-hughes for yr reply. Some peaple claim they get higher rendering speed when using highspeed disks, raid 0,.. I only could understand that there would be a difference if there is not enough free RAM on board, and that the system needs paging. Then of course the diskspeed is an issue.
