Does VS do Chroma Key.. If so How?

Post by Tasana Studios »

My Wish;

To have the ability to do chroma key. VS has always been my fave editing program, I even gave away a copy of SVP9 because I prefer VS. But I did not the chroma key feature in SVP9 and wanted it very badly in VS. I do hope one day they put in it.
That is all I want right now, other than that I am as happy as a peach with what they give for the price.

It has been there for at least the last three versions, and possibly four or more... If you put something -- image or video -- in one of the overlay tracks and right click it, you can then select "Open Options Panel". And then you get to the lower right of the preview screen, what you see in the image below. This is a screen grab for X4 but it was similar in previous versions.

I do use that option a lot for effects, but what I want to do is (no one laugh, at least out loud) is shoot me flying. I want to get a green screen and then prop me up on a green table and lay over that. I then want to take a skyline and run it in the back ground and have me flying.
Can I do that?
If you say yes I have a green screen save in my bookmarks, just say the word and off I will fly.

I split your post from the wishlist, placing it as a new topic since it was evolving from a wish to a How to question.

First you need to do some reading on chroma-key. It's not as simple as filming in front of a green or blue screen, then keying it out in a video editing app. One of the most important aspects is lighting. If you don't get the lighting right, you will have problems when you try to key out the color. Once you get the lighting down, then the program will be able to understand what the exact color is you're wanting to remove. Improper lighting, and the subject's distance from the screen, can cast shadows, which is interpreted as a different color.

I have a studio in a back room of my house. I also have a 3 point lighting system. I have also read a great deal on shooting in front of a GS, and my son has already produced the effect desired in SVP10. So we know the HOW, I am wanting to know if VSX3 can do the same thing.

A demonstration of Chroma keying in action from an ancient version 10 of VideoStudio :-

And then I borrowed the young lady with her camera from V10 - and introduced her to Version X4 :-

A green sheet works.

It doesn't have to be green - any plain colour works - it's just that green is best as it is least likely to appear in the subject - which could cause transparent patches.

I did try to find a green sheet at Wal**** but they do not have a solid green one. Also Brian mentioned that lighting has to be correct, also the GS can't have major color shifts in it from what I have learned, and sheets (cheap ones) do have color shifts.

You could always use a white sheet and dye it.

And yes, lighting is the most important part when it comes to chroma-keying.

Excellent idea Jeff. I will pick up a white sheet and green die this weekend.
Thanks for the suggestion
