VS X4 lost "avi" codecs
First I'll mention that I should have been able to correct this. Since I'm posting it's obvious that I have not, and I think someone had a similar problem before. I tried locating the post, and came up empty, mainly due to not remembering the wording used in the post about the problem.
Somehow VS X4 has forgot several of the avi codecs on my Vista machine. There should be and was, more than 3. I no longer have VS X3 installed on my Vista machine, so I checked VS X2: Well it sees all of them, and then I checked VS X4 on my WInXP machine: Yep they're all there..
Does anyone recall seeing this type of problem posted, and recall the post, or what the fix might be?
I've done done everything short of reformatting my system, which is not going to happen for awhile. If someone does, I would appreciate it. If not I'm not going to fret too much over it, as I have my WinXP machine to fall back on.
Thanks...

Re: VS X4 lost "avi" codecs
Hello,
it must have been many months ago, that I was here last time. Just through the new "photovideolive" site, I found back here.
I remember that there were problems with the divX Codec (also an "avi" codec") in VS X3.
Search the registry for "vidc.uldx" and delete that. Then the divX Codec should reappear in VS X3 (hopefully in VS X4, too).

Re: VS X4 lost "avi" codecs
Thank you for the suggestion. I searched for that file, and just the file type (extension) and came up empty. So that file apparently is not the cause in my situation. Thank you again..

Re: VS X4 lost "avi" codecs
Did you uninstall something in that system recently? You might consider reverting back to some time ago (not sure I am using the right terminology). Windows has a way to go back several days ago and restore your system. Perhaps that will bring the codecs back... Al

Re: VS X4 lost "avi" codecs
Hello again,
there seems to be a missunderstanding. I wasn't talking about a file but about an entry in the Windows registry. I found the old posts here through the board search. Have a look here: http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 83#p193307
Maybe that helps....

That's the post I've been trying to locate. Thank you for finding it. Now to see if it will work for me too!!

You're the Man!!! It worked. Have all my codecs back.

Re: VS X4 lost "avi" codecs
VS X4 issue with AVI Codec?
I am a long term and very loyal user of VideoStudio and consider myself relatively familiar with this software. Actually, I started with VS 4 SE that came along with a IEEE 1394 PC card. Meanwhile, I have made almost all upgrades and ended up now with VS Pro X4. However, I am more than disappointed. I have the following problems that might be related to some codec issues.
It is also worthwile to mention that I never had these issues before when working with VS X3 and Windows XP. Today, I have VS Pro X4 running under Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (details see below).
1. Capture issue
- I use a Canon HV30 camcorder, connected through firewire (IEEE 1394). The camcorder uses the European PAL format.
- When switched to the Capture tab, VS shows as the source correctly "Canon DV Device".
- The camcorder is set to forced DV output (even if the material is HD), since I had problems with HD output in the past.
- The capture format is set to DV (not DVD!).
- Capture options are set to DV type-1 and insert to timeline.
- Split by scene is activated.
- The camera controls via VS work properly.
- I start capture, which starts the camera properly, and the preview screen shows the captured video footage.
- However, when I stop capturing, I receive the following error message: "Capturing failed. The file created is corrupted and unusable. It will automatically be deleted."
I have tried all kinds of combinations and project property settings, but none of them would work. These are my normal settings for the project properties:
PAL (25 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 16:9, 25 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- PAL, 32.000 kHz; 12 Bit; Stereo
Since this did not work, I chose under the capture options "DV type-2" and also change the project property settings to DV type-2. Here are the corresponding property settings:
PAL (25 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 16:9, 25 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 2
DV Audio -- PAL, 32.000 kHz; 12 Bit; Stereo
In this case, the camera controls again work properly, and the capture starts normally, with the video in the preview window. However, when I stop capturing, this time I don't receive an error message. But the thumbnail of the capture video does not show the image of the video; it is dark grey in the upper half and white in the lower half.
I switch then to the Edit tab, the video is inserted to the timeline, but it does again not show any picture. If I click then on the video in the timeline, I get a fatal error with the following message: "The program has encountered an unspecified error and has stopped functioning. Please contact Corel Technical Support and send the dump file for analysis. C:\Users\Ulrich\AppData\Local\Temp\vstudio_14.0.0.342_20110502_222450.DMP .
Interestingly, the VS Pro X4 can capure video from the same Canon HV30 camcorder over the same connection, if the capture format is switched to "DVD", i.e. when the capture is in the MPEG format. The settings in this case (after adjusting in the capture options) are as follows:
DVD PAL LPCM HQ 16_9
DVD File
PAL, 720x576, VBR 9000 Kbps
Lower Field First, 16:9
LCPM Audio
With these settings, the capture is without problems, and the captured files are properly inserted into the timeline. However, I would prefer to make the capture in the DV format, since the MPEG is already using some compression, while the DV format keeps the video capture in the most uncompressed format.
In order to check whether there is any issue with the camcorder, I also tested with Adobe Premiere Elements 9. There was no problem at all to capture in the DV format and use this format for editing.
I also installed the codec package ffdshow x64 (64 bit version of the codec package) and set it to be used by VS Pro X4. However, it did not help. I uninstalled then VS Pro X4 and re-installed it again, in case it can only detect the codecs during the installation (as it was mentioned here in the forum once). However, it did not help, and it did not add any codecs in the selection list for the project properties either.
Last, but not least, I checked whether there were some "lost avi codecs" as described in this thread. However, I did not find in the whole registry any "empty" codec entry. Therefore, my current problem seems to be something different.
2. Format mismatch with files captured earlier with X3 under Windows XP
It might also be of interest that VS Pro X4 cannot open such files anymore that were captured with VS X3 before. I had X3 running under Windows XP (32 bit) before, and the files were captured as .AVI files, type-1. I could edit them with X3 without any problem. Now, when I try to open them from VS Pro X4, I receive the error message: "Unable to open file E:\.....\...avi. File format mismatch. This, even though the project properties are set exactly according to the original capture:
PAL (25 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 16:9, 25 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- PAL, 32.000 kHz; 12 Bit; Stereo
As a matter of fact, VS Pro X4 cannot open any AVI files anymore from whatever (harddisk) source they are. However, it is interesting that it can open the following media formats (from the harddisk) without any problem and insert them into the timeline for editing:
*.wmv
*.mpg
3. Conclusions
After all the trial and error and spending more than two full days to figure out what could be wrong, I am more or less at the end of my phantasy, and I am interested if anyone has a good idea to get this .AVI issue resolved.
Thanks in advance for any useful hint!

Re: VS X4 lost "avi" codecs
Well, since nobody has an answer to my issue.... I searched and searched again and again. And here comes the solution...! I hope this might help also other people for similar issues with (AVI) codecs.
First, yes it turned out to be a code issue, as suspected. I installed then the "K-Lite Codec Pack" (Freeware), as recommended by Corel in the Knowledgebase for VS. I installed the 32 bit version (7.1.0) and the 64 bit version (4.6.0) - the latter in case I have once a 64 bit software running. Then, I used the available patch to make the upgrade to the versions 7.1.8 and 4.1.8 respectively.
However, when I tried then to view my AVI files, either I received an error message from Windows Media Player, or the file played as "audio only". Therefore, I opened the K-lite "Codec Tweak Tool - Manage preferred DirectShow source filters" and found that the settings for .AVI were for an unavailable codec with a sequence of random characters. So, I set it back to "Microsoft - recommended". And... oh wonder - it all works now! I.e. I can import the AVI files captured by VS before, either in DV type-1 or type-2. Both work. Also the capture from the Canon HV30 camcorder works perfectly fine.
So, these were all great news for me, and perhaps the solution might also help others suffering from similar issues.
Good luck!

A «BIG THANK YOU» for your solution,
I had exactly the same problem after upgrading to X4 and after searching for a day I came upon your post and now everything is working perfectly.
Again Thank You
