X4 Audio BUG?

Post by BUGS-R-US »

Just upgraded from X3 to X4 - created first project and as soon as I started trimming the video, I noticed that when I scrubbed through the project, there was no sound! I then tried scrubbing each clip, and that worked, then I tried scrubbing the project again, still no sound - tried clip on timeline and now no sound there also.

Threw out the clip, deleted the project and started over - same thing happened - audio dropped out as soon as I started cutting down the clip on the timeline.

Took exact same clip (simple .avi file) into X3 and works fine. Cutting it and editing it to hearts content, sound works fine in X3. Started over again in X4 - audio drops out AGAIN!

ZERO sound issues in any other program I have been using. Audio works fine in all other applications, except X4.

Your thoughts?

Yes "enable audio on scrubbing" is on - the audio is disappearing entirely from the clip. No audio on any form of playback as soon as I edit the clip on the timeline.

I have been playing with various clips and it seems X4 only does this on certain clips - namely the ones I have converted from .FlV to AVI - BUT, X3 handles them ALL fine!

I'm afraid there is no such thing as a simple .avi file, with well over 800 different types, could you tell us which yours is.

Details I have, but which "type" by some kind of specific name, I have no clue:

Both .avi files were .flv files converted via Mobile Media Converter to .avi - both .avi files play just fine in X3 and X4 and in Media Player and VLC media player and in Windows Live Movie Maker, UNTIL I try to adjust them in X4 - then the audio ceases to work.

I have not had the time to play with .flv files converted via another conversion tool nor have I tried to import much of anything else with X4 as bugs tend to ruin the work flow pretty quickly.

Please right click on the problem files *inside* Video Studio -- either in the timeline or in the library window, and then either make a screen grab and post the image here; or else manually copy ALL the properties here please. These will include exactly what type of AVI we are dealing with...

Microsoft AVI Files
10,942 KB
25,000 Frames / sec
59.920 seconds
180.95 kbps

Video:
Compression: Mpeg4 Decoder DMO
Attributes: 24 bits, 1920 x 1080
Total Frames: 1,498 frames

Audio:
Compression: MPEG Layer-3
Attributes: 128 kBits, 44,100 Hz, Stereo
Total Samples: 2,643,840 samples

= = = =

FYI - while X3 has been working fine for this type of file, I just now also got the same problem as X4, the audio ceased working as soon as I split the clip, deleted part of the clip and then tried to play the remaining project.

Some types of MP3 audio files have been known to cause problems in VS. Try converting them to WAV files.

I'm having this exact same issue. I found others here with the same problem but no solution. It seems like all the solutions just blame you. I need this ASAP for a project. If I can't get this to work within the next hour, I'm going to have to try another video editor.

@BlackLab is correct. VS X4 has problems with some versions of mpeg3. I had a similar issue with a video transcoded with handbrake utilizing the Lame audio encoder. I re-transcoded the video using the AAC encoder and the "no audio" issue was resolved. Below are the BAD and GOOD video properties in hopes it may be useful for others:

BAD
(audio codec: lame, Dolby Pro Logic II, Bitrate=160)

File format: MPEG-4 File

Video
Video type: H.264 Main Profile Video
Total frames: 5,630 frame(s)
Attributes: 24 bits, 720 x 478
Frame rate: 23.991 frames/sec
Data rate: 755 Kbps

Audio
Audio Type: MPEG Audio Layer 3
Total samples: 11,258,496 Samples
Attributes: 48000 Hz, 16 Bit. Stereo
Bit rate: 128 Kbps

GOOD
(audio codec: AAC, Dolby Pro Logic II, Bitrate=160)

File format: MPEG-4 File

Video
Video type: H.264 Main Profile Video
Total frames: 5,630 frame(s)
Attributes: 24 bits, 720 x 478
Frame rate: 23.991 frames/sec
Data rate: 755 Kbps

Audio
Audio Type: MPEG AAC Audio
Total samples: 11,257,856 Samples
Attributes: 48000 Hz, 16 Bit. Stereo
Bit rate: 160 Kbps

I am in the same predicament. It is not the sort of file, as I have tried many (and even the Samples from within the program). Please help, I need this soon for a project

I had this exact same problem, sound would play on the clip ok, but not on the project. It probably happened after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

Initial testing shows that by ticking "Enable 5.1 Surround" from the settings menu drop down has fixed my problem as detailed here.

I haven't created my project yet though, hope its fixed there also.
