VideoStudio X4 Pro - Error during burn
On Windows 7 OS (64bit) getting the following error when attempting to burn a DVD:
Unspecified error 5:0:0
I've attached a jpeg image containing the error.
Tried looking in the knowledgbase, but of course it's under construction. Tried contacting support, but of course the chat system is down. Then to add insult to injury, friggin Corel wants to charge me $15 to describe to them this burn error on their product. If I had known that this was the quality of product and level of support I was going to receive, I never would have purchased this product.
Any help whatsoever would be appreciated.
System info:
Box: Shuttle Inc SG45 V10
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) (build 7600)
CPU: 2.67 gigahertz Intel Core2 Quad Q9400
RAM: 8GB
Disc: 1.5TB (spread across 3 discs)
Unspecified error 5:0:0

Re: VideoStudio X4 Pro - Error during burn
Hi and welcome to the forums.
I only wish it could have been under happier circumstances...
Unfortunately, I am going to have to annoy you further by saying that you haven't really provided enough information on which to base even an educated guess. You don't say what format the video you have edited has or what editing you did to it. And we also need to know something about your workflow: did you, for instance, do your editing and then select Share > Create Video File > DVD, or did you jump straight into the burning module (Share > Create Disc > DVD) which would have inserted the project file linked to whatever your original video format was? While the latter is normally an acceptable option, sometimes the nature of the format causes a hiccup in the burning module as VS tries to convert a difficult format into DVD-compatible mpeg-2 as well as the other complex steps involved in burning a disc, and doing it all together on the fly.
For quite a few of us here, our preferred workflow is to first produce a DVD-compatible mpeg-2 of your project in the editing module, and then insert that in the burning module.
There is a sticky post towards the top of this forum labelled obviously enough "PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE POSTING" -- see http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?p=41454#p41454 That will give you a better idea of the information we need. Hopefully then someone here might be able to give a more helpful answer.

Re: VideoStudio X4 Pro - Error during burn
By the way, your comment about the Knowledge Base being under construction intrigued me, so I checked. And you are right of course. But that does not mean that KB was totally off-line. I put in a query about Unspecified Error [5:0:0] and got the following response:
000004335 - Unspecified Error 5.0.0 when burning a DVD or creating a video file
When creating a DVD or Video file and you receive "Unspecified error 5.0.0" please try the following:
Update Direct X from Microsoft.com
Update your Video Card drivers
There could also be a damaged or corrupted file in the project, Try saving the project as an MPEG file. If the same error message appears when you save the project, close the program and create a copy of your project file. Remove files from the project and try re-saving until you have identified the damaged file (Please note to also check the Audio files in your project). Open the original project file and delete the damaged file.

Re: VideoStudio X4 Pro - Error during burn
Ken, thank you for your time and your well thought out reply. Definitely not annoyed, as I mentioned, any help is appreciated. I apologize for sounding so damn whiny, but I was under a time constraint and ended up using a more reliable tool to burn the video.
However in answer to your specific questions for information:
1) Source video was MPEG.
2) Cropped out bad video, added VS beginning and ending objects, and added several titles and transitions throughout project.
3) Share > Create Disc > DVD -> Create to disc checked -> received reported error.
4) Share > Create Disc > DVD -> Create to image checked -> received reported error.
The only way I was able to burn a DVD was to use a Roxio tool after I did the following:
1) Share > Create Video File > DVD > Save project as MPEG.
2) Burned DVD from MPEG using Roxio.
I really have a problem with having to do a workaround such as creating an MPEG-2 and then using that as the input to the burn process. What's the point of paying extra for this all-in-one product when it doesn't allow you to perform all tasks in one logical set of workflow? I would love for this to work as all other product featuers appear to work well now and it's a cool product.
Note that I tried your other suggestions in the other post (running DirectX 11 latest ver, NVIDIA latest drivers, burn using saved MPEG project) and still received the same error.
Here's the project/video data requrested from the sticky-post:

Re: VideoStudio X4 Pro - Error during burn
Do U have either motion video or music trak unchecked in the burning module?
If you do, check both and try reburning.

Thanks for replying wstagner.
I've attached a screenshot of two Burn windows.
Where on these windows are the options you mentioned?

Re: VideoStudio X4 Pro - Error during burn
That's all a matter of perception. For many of us here, that is not a workaround but a logical workflow -- you do your editing, you convert the file into a DVD-compatible mpeg-2 then you insert that in the burning module.I really have a problem with having to do a workaround such as creating an MPEG-2 and then using that as the input to the burn process. What's the point of paying extra for this all-in-one product when it doesn't allow you to perform all tasks in one logical set of workflow?
The bottom line is that your project -- regardless of what video it includes -- is at some stage going to have to be converted to DVD-compatible mpeg-2. With your workflow -- which I acknowledge should work, but doesn't always do so -- putting the project file into the burning module will still require the conversion of the project into mpeg-2. But you are in effect adding an extra complex task (conversion) into what is an already complex task (authoring/burning) and things can go wrong when too many complex things are being thrown together on the fly.
And our preferred workflow involves no extra time -- the conversion of project will take exactly the same time whether done in the Editing phase or in the burning module. The only thing extra is the extra keystroke or two to first produce a new file and to then get that into the burning module -- at most a couple of seconds.
But definitely look at wstagner's suggestion -- some other users have avoided problems that way.

Re: VideoStudio X4 Pro - Error during burn
Hi Ken,
I truly appreciate your opinion, although I do disagree with you. There are many things in life that are a matter of perception, but a software product with documented and finite features is not one of them. Without company-sponsored product documentation released with the product that support this workflow it is a teeny-bit condescending to someone in the software architecture and engineering industry to suggest this is a matter of perception. If this was the documented workflow, I really would have given it a try before contacting the non-existent Corel support and then this forum.
The X4 documentation states "Your entire VideoStudio project can be brought into the Create Disc dialog box for burning, even if you have not saved it as a *.vsp file.". With that in mind, but with a saved .vsp file, I proceeded as directed and received the reported and very informative (sic) "Unspecified error 5:0:0". Clearly the prodcut is not working as documented and there is a bug in a production product. No crime, just a bug that needs to be fixed. In the meantime I will gladly use any workaround or undocumented workflow that works until a bug fix is provided.
Segue to your suggested workflow...
I mentioned in my first reply to you "Note that I tried your other suggestions in the other post (running DirectX 11 latest ver, NVIDIA latest drivers, burn using saved MPEG project) and still received the same error.". However, I did not try wstagner's suggestion in conjunction with yours.
So here are the steps I just tried:
1) Share -> Create Video File -> DVD MPEG2 (720x480)
...a) .mpg file created in a few minutes.
2) Share -> Create disc -> DVD
...a) Delete project video
...b) Add MPEG-2 video created in step #1
...c) Check "Create Menu".
......i) Ensure "Motion Menu" is checked.
......ii) Choose a "Background Music" track (not a checkbox as suggested earlier).
...d) Check "Create to disc" OR "Create disc image".
Same error as originally reported: "Unspecified Error 5:0:0".....bummer
I also tried wstagner's suggestion with my original workflow and received the same error.
So at least we have documented that the error is occuring with my original workflow, my original workflow + wstagner's, your workflow, and your workflow + wstagner's.
I''l try starting a new project from scratch and inserting the created MPEG-2 video since it may be a corrupted project file as you suggested.

Re: VideoStudio X4 Pro - Error during burn
If you're implying that Ken Berry is in the software architecture and engineering industry, you're waaaayyyy wrong. Ken is like the rest of us, just a well versed user of the product. What we suggest, or recommend comes from knowing the limitations, the glitches and how to work around them. We know that the program is not perfect, and have raised issues dating back to Ulead.Without company-sponsored product documentation released with the product that support this workflow it is a teeny-bit condescending to someone in the software architecture and engineering industry to suggest this is a matter of perception.
Finally what Ken suggests as a perception is right on the money!! If you're end result is to be a DVD, then the program will produce a compatible MPEG-2 before burning the disc. It's going to take the same amount of time, if you go the Create Video File first, or carry your project file into the burn module, where VS will still create the MPEG-2 video file, but during the same process will be creating video files of your menus, as well as creating the container files (VOB), and other required files to complete the DVD structure. There's been countless times people have used your method of Share>Create Disc, using the Project files (VSP) in the burn module, had constant problems, and when they tried the suggested workaround of creating the video file first were successful.
If you don't agree or like the suggestions then by all means don't use them. After all, they're just that a suggestion..

Re: VideoStudio X4 Pro - Error during burn
Okay, now the final results are in...
Regardless of the last reply, it is quite clear that I am open to suggestion as I have tried every suggestion offered both privately and publicly. I just took and still take exception to the suggestion that the documented workflow versus the undocumented workflow is a matter of perception. The truth is this is a bug on a production product sold to the masses and I'm trying any and all workarounds offered until Corel provides a fix.
As noted in my last post, I've tried:
1) my original workflow
2) my original workflow + wstagner's
3) Ken's workflow
4) Ken's workflow + wstagner's
...they all resulted in the "Unspecified Error 5:0:0".
Also as mentioned in my last post, I just tried creating a new project from scratch in case the project file was corrupted as Ken had suggested earlier (see...open to suggestion). I used the following two burn methods two methods:
1) New project, Edit -> add MPEG-2 video created from VS, then Share -> Create disc -> DVD.
2) New project, Share -> Create disc -> DVD, add MPEG-2 video created from VS.
I have now tried all previous workflow suggestions and a few of my own ad-hoc workflows not mentioned here, all with the same result...the oblique error "Unspecified Error 5:0:0".

Re: VideoStudio X4 Pro - Error during burn
Let's roll back a little, and get back to the KB suggestion of updating DirectX. I know you subsequently said you were running the latest version of DirectX (version 11) but did you actually go to the Microsoft site and manually download and install the very latest update of DirectX available there? Yes, version 11 is the latest version and comes with Windows 7. But it is not automatically updated in the usual round of Windows updates. You have to manually update it with the updates that Microsoft posts ever three or four months... And it is known in this forum at least to correct a couple of strange happenings in the burning module on some users computers...
By the way, don't be put off by the fact that the MS site seems to suggest it works with earlier versions of Windows. It does, but it is an omnibus download which only updates whichever version of DirectX your computer has on it.

Re: VideoStudio X4 Pro - Error during burn
Oh Crap Ken. All I did earlier is run the "dxdiag" tool to retrieve the DirectX version info. As a friggin developer (on Microsoft a few other OS platforms) I should know better with Microsoft. Not everything is as it should be with them. Although they appear to update all components using the automatic updates, that is not always the case and it eludes me as to why this would be one of those components missing regular updates.
Have to prepare dinner for the family (5:15pm PST), so I will download, update, test and report my progress later.
Thank you…I hope this is it…fingers crossed.

Re: VideoStudio X4 Pro - Error during burn
Damn, double damn!
Didn't work Ken. I installed the latest version of DirectX and tested a DVD burn. Installed Win 7 SP1 and tested a DVD burn.
Both tests failed with the same error I originally reported ("Unspecified Error 5:0:0").
I even tried uninstalling and re-installing VideoStudio just to be sure it wasn't a bad install. Burn tests failed after this as well.
My testing methods were:
1) New project, Edit -> add MPEG-2 video created from VS, then Share -> Create disc -> DVD (as well as Create disc image).
2) New project, Share -> Create disc -> DVD, add MPEG-2 video created from VS.
Probably, the most surprising thing is that I still get the above error when I try to create a disc image.
Sheesh...what's a guy to do.

Re: VideoStudio X4 Pro - Error during burn
Well that's a bummer! About the only other thing I can think to ask is whether you have any software on your computer like Nero's InCD which is packet-writing software. You can build up a list of things you want to burn to disc and direct it at this program, and they just sit there until there are enough to make a burn worthwhile. The thing is, with such programs, that they in effect take over the burner and deny access to it by other programs (such as VS). I am not sure, though, that they would block making an ISO file or DVD Folder...
That being said, if you have Nero or the equivalent Roxio suite, can you use the mpeg-2 file you generated in VS and burn a disc using Nero? If so, then there is clearly something wrong with VS's operation on your computer. But if not, then it points to some cause other than VS... BTW, I find Nero's authoring options (including menu template selection) in the most recently versions 9 and 10 to be excellent... and there is of course nothing wrong with using a number of different programs for different aspects of the same project. I for instance normally produce a DVD Folder in the burn module instead of an actual disc. That allows me to test it on the computer first, but I then use Nero to burn multiple copies... And I do this because it is convenient, rather than because I have any problem in the VS burn module...

Re: VideoStudio X4 Pro - Error during burn
You hit the nail on the head Ken. I used both Nero and Windows DVD Maker to burn what I needed. I used the generated mpeg file as the content to burn the DVDs. I mentioned this in my first reply to you, but I didn't specify what I used. It's too bad because I really love the editing features of this product. It was suggested to me privately to try the trial version of "Movie Factory 7 Pro" to see if that works. I may just do that.
Note that in all this time since I reported this to Corel via support case #01014703, I have not heard a peep from them, not even an email to say that they are looking at it...kind of sad if you know what I mean.
Ken I truly appreciate your expertise, your suggestions, and your patience and hope that at some time in the near future I will have a resolution to report in this forum.
