Project AVI-mpeg4 with no audio

Post by ayla »

Hi all,
I downloaded several avi files (mpeg4) from the net. They play well with both video and audio on my media player, even as clips on Videostudio V8  . I would like to create a project joining several clips, with filters, transitions, an so on. However when I try to play the project I get no audio, it seems the soft doesn't recognize the format of the audio, it has no codec to this format  .
What can I do, how can I add a new codec to Videostudio, how can I know what codec I need, what..., how...? :?:

Well, thanks a lot for the help.
Ayla

There's a utility called G-Spot (I'm not kidding) that shows info about a file.

You can probably find it at videohelp.com in the TOOLS section.

You don't mention which VS version you have, but I also noticed this problem with VS 6. The solution I'll give you is a little bit of a pain-in-the-a** to do, since VS doesn't recognize all codecs installed on your system. Example: On my system, running XP with WMP 10, I loaded all current codecs, including ones for AVI support (including DIVX), and all my vidz play in WMP, but not in VS. BUT ..... I have the Dazzle MovieStar editor, which came with my capturer, and I had that BEFORE I got VS, and guess what ...... it supports all those formats. Hmmm, funny or what???

Solution: Go to videohelp.com, click on TOOLS on left, enter TMPEG in the search box at top, it will bring up TMPEG Encoder. It's a little, small program that you can run almost anything through and convert to MPEG-1 or 2. What you'll basically do is render the video, then be able to use it in VS. A free version will allow you to do MPEG-1 only, where the "pay" version allows you to do MPEG-2.

You can also use TMPEG to convert WMV files to MPEG so you can use them in VS. For a little program, it does quite a lot.

Don't bother trying the Windows Movie Maker to do this -- it takes TOO LONG, plus you'll have to convert to a WMV file, then use TMPEG anyway to convert to MPEG.
