Reducing audio level globally for clips or music
How can I reduce the audio volume for all the clips in the project? The original sound from the video clips is just ambient noise. I want to reduce it all by the same amount throughout the project, so that the music I put on the music track will be easier to hear, with the ambient noise being only a soft background. I can't find any control that lets me change the volume for all clips at once, and the documentation isn't very clear.

There is none. The only thing similar you can do is save your project (projectname.vsp), then open a new project and insert projectname.vsp into the timeline. That project will now be treated as one whole video clip. Now you can adjust the volume for the whole thing, then add your audio track.

Re: Reducing audio level globally for clips or music
If I insert one project into another as you suggest, does that involve any reencoding or decompression/recompression that might reduce quality?

Hi
There is an option, but you should complete the editing of the main timeline first.
I have to admit I haven’t used this method, but running tests seems to work.
Create a sound file of your project
1 / Share -- Create Sound file
2 / Add to timeline
3 / Mute the first video clip.
4 / Copy and Paste the Attributes to the rest of the clips.
Edit the sound tracks to match volumes.
Further editing of the main video track is still available but you may have to re-create the sound file.
Remember creating a sound file includes all sounds within the project.

No, that only happens when you render (Share step). If I insert one project into another as you suggest, does that involve any reencoding or decompression/recompression that might reduce quality?

But you cannot apply any further edits to the inserted project.

Sounds like something to add the X5 wish list.

Re: Reducing audio level globally for clips or music
That's okay. I usually don't add music until all the other editing is done. I tried it and it seems to work. The only disadvantage is that I can't render and select "same format as first video clip" any more.trevor andrew wrote:But you cannot apply any further edits to the inserted project.

Re: Reducing audio level globally for clips or music
Well, I tried rendering, and the results were significantly inferior in image quality to the original. It seems that if I don't render with "same format as first video clip," I always lose something.
I've inserted 1 frame from a video clip at the beginning of the video and covered it with a black overlay, so that I can render to the same format as the first clip. We'll see how that turns out.
