Pan scenes in .avi clips jerky in VS Pro X4

Post by zzplus3 »

Hi there,

I'm new to VS Pro X4 upgrading from VS 11.5 Plus. I am importing some .avi files and burning to a disc. Most of the .avi clips are fine on the DVD, but two that have panning sequences are very jerky. I checked the source .avi files and they pan smoothly. I'm looking for guidance as to how to fix this problem.

Time is of the essence since this is for a Cub Scout slideshow, need to fix this ASAP to have copies made by Friday! Thanks in advance ...

I've explored changing the Speed to Quality slider and also the Frame Type (Upper/Lower field first) setting to no avail.

AVI Clip Properties:
File Format: Microsoft AVI files
File Size: 13,513 KB
Frame rate: 23.976 frames/sec
Duration: 62.479 seconds
Data rate: 215.01 kbps

Video
Compression: ffdshow Video Decoder
Attributes: 24 bits, 720x404
Total Frames: 1,498 frame(s)

Audio
Compression: AC3
Attributes: 48.000 kHz, 6 Channels
Total Samples: 2,999,808 samples

Project Properties:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits: 720x480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-NTSC) 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz. Stereo

Hi

Where did you get these video files from? Seem very strange sizes.

Your project properties show as Ntsc, so are you in the US.?

The AVI using 720 x 404 looks very odd but is near to 16:9 widescreen

The frame rate 23.976 seems to indicate a Pal size?????

It all seems a sort of mismatch to me.

Try converting the clips to DV-Avi
With the clip in the timeline Share Create Video File – DV (16:9)

I am unsure whether you should be using Pal or Ntsc settings?????????

I have no idea what to suggest, but the speed of 23.97 seems very close to cinematic 24 fps... rather than PAL per se. But apart from that, I agree with Trevor that the frame size seems very strange, and the bitrate at 215.01 seems both strange and very low. I can't say I am particularly surprised that matching it to those Project Properties, if that is what you did, produced all sorts of problems...

Let's see if I can explain more.

I used DVDFab to rip a children's movie DVD to the .avi format. There are 8 short clips that serve as an intro to each slideshow/song of the Scouts. I used avidemux to cut out the little clips which range from 30 seconds to about a minute and a half.

There are so many knobs and dials to turn on all of these tools that I'm sure I could have misstepped anywhere! If there's a better process I can follow for the 2 clips that pan, I'd be happy to start back at square one with the DVD. The rest of the clips are fine.

I don't know what ffdshow is, but I can check into that ...

Why are you using DVDFab to rip and avidemux to edit when you have X4, which does it all?

Hi

As Jeff said try X4, unless its protected then you should be able to import the DVD to VS.

The DVD contains Vob files which are MPEG 2 files, so if you have to rip then use Mpeg2 properties.

If installed the ffdshow should be in the Add and Remove list via My Computer.

At least we now know where the strange sizes came from………………..

Oh! I should have said that I just downloaded the trial version of X4 a few days ago. Previously, I was using 11.5 Plus (Ulead). I believe I tried ripping from the DVD and it kept crashing ... therefore I resorted to those other free tools. I hadn't even thought of trying it in X4 since I already had the .avi files.

I will try that tonight and post an update. I am optimistic that it might work!

Thank you!

One other thing to try, unless the DVD is copyprotected..

Using Windows Explorer, copy the DVD to your hard drive. This would copy the crucial VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD to your computer. Then in either VS 11.5 + or VS X4. For VS 11 go to File>Insert Media File to (library or Timeline),, then in the Select a DVD Title dialog, press the Import DVD Folder button. Navigate to where you copied the DVD to your computer, and select the VIDEO_TS folder, click OK. The next dialog that opens is the Import DVD dialog. You will see Disc Label, in the upper left pane, that has a tree structure....

Here's some screenshots.. (Clicking on the images will enlarge them in an new window)

And just to clarify, so "select" the title or chapters you must put a "check" in the box next to the title or chapter(s) you want to import.
