VideoStuidio X4 and Quicktime (.mov)

Post by SidecarSue »

I just downloaded X4 (since I was never able to get the X3 version of DVD burning properly. I just tried to bring a .mov file into the program (which it says it supports) but it won't let me. It's not on the list if I choose import and if I try to drag it, it won't work.

Any suggestions? I installed Quicktime on my machine to see if that would make a different but it didn't. I would appreciate any assistance.

Thank you.

Hi SidecarSue! Welcome to Corel User Forum.

Please try to do these steps:

1. Go to Edit Step and under Media, click on Import Media Files.
2. You can now browse for the video clip and click on Open.

And if you are getting any specific error, you can provide a screen shot here.

Thank you.

Hi Reste,

Attached is a screen shot of the video browse dialog box. See? No Quicktime .mov choice.

Hi Suzette,

Something is not quite right with your install of VS X4. I do show QT MOV files. On my Vista machine I'm running QT Player 7.6.5
vsx4_mov files-1.png
The Menu choices:
vsx4_mov files-2.png
I don't have Win7, however I don't recall there being any exclusion of MOV files for Win7.

Hi Suzette

Can you check your computer to see if Quick Time is installed.
Certainly it does not show in the image you provided, unlike Rons image.

Quicktime should be listed from the Start-Program list
It will also show within the Add and Remove list, this may be called Programs and Features.

Either way I would re-install QT

To install go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

Hi Suzette,

I agree with Ron that there's something wrong with the installation of VideoStudio Pro X4 on your computer. You can try first to reinstall the program from the Control Panel>> Add/Remove programs. Just follow the default installation, then from here, you can update us if you still don't get the .MOV option under file types. Thanks! :)

Thanks for the ideas guys. I think I'll uninstall X3 (which is on the machine and also does not have a .mov choice) and X4 AND Quicktime player. Then I'll clean my registry and reinstall Quicktime and X4. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again,

Well, that didn't fix the problem but I have been doing a bit of reading on CODEX and a lot of programs not supporting .mov files because with Win 7, Windows media supports .mov files. I tried checking the registry as some have done for other programs but didn't see anything that gives choices for video types. The quest lives on.

I will continue to post here because I'm sure I'm not the only one with an issue like this.

Al, do you have Win 7? I checked my Adobe Media encoder won't give me the the .mov choice either. There HAS to be a fix. I'm still researching.

I don't think it has anything to do with Windows 7. As you will see in my profile, I have Windows 7 32 bit, and it happily can see and insert .mov files. Quicktime is also listed in the drop down for Insert Video. I just tested it (again!) and it definitely works. My version of Quicktime is 7.6.9, which I think is the most recent version, though I could be wrong on that. I don't pay too close attention.

EDIT: Yep -- just checked for Quicktime updates and was told I have the latest version...

I just checked the version of Quicktime and I have the same version. I did find another thread where someone had the same issue on Win XP. They wound up reformatting the hard drive and starting over. (Not gonna happen). I figured it had something to do with Win 7 since both VideoStudio and Media Encoder are having the same problem. One thing I did do is try typing in *.mov to open the file. It worked in MediaEncoder but I got a file type mismatch error in VideoStudio.

Thanks Ken for the input. Hopefully I can chase this down. I did try looking through the registry but that didn't help.

Hi Suz

Are you able to browse Windows Explorer to locate your Mov video files.
I assume they show as ok

Can you drag and drop these files to Video Studio timeline?

However VS X4 does not allow me to drag and drop mov to the library.

On my setup, X4 allows me not only to drag and drop .mov files into the library but also into the timeline... Just tried and tested it. The mystery deepens...!!!

I also have no problems with the MOV files being inserted to the Library or Timeline, by command or drag and drop, on either of my computers. I've looked at the various codecs used in these, which are MJPEG, JPEG 2000, Sorenson, and h.264. I don't know if maybe VS is choking on the particular codec being used. However Suzette's VS should present the option of MOV files in the menus.

I recalled, and done a search to check my memory, that when Vista was released, and Corel released a Vista Patch for VS 10, there were problems with Q.T. MOV files. In fact I think at that time the Vista Patch removed the MOV menu option. http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 24#p149124

Suzette, did you purchase the boxed or download version? I'm wondering if one or the other may have some bad coding, where MOV files have inadvertently been excluded.

Just a side note, not all those file types in the menus are accepted by VS. For example the FLV file type, which just is flat not an editable file type. In most applications that I'm familiar with, it must first be converted to be edited. C3D (Ulead Cool 3D), will insert into VS X4, however does not work properly.
