I've always been under the impression that loading foreign codecs (those not supplied with the program) can cause serious problems. But I see in the thread below that someone is recommending loading them. So which is it, download codecs, or stick with the product installed set and rely on their various built-in updates?

Re: Codecs
No, the warning against loading 'foreign codecs' is against loading entire codec packs as they are usually thrown together willy-nilly with an eye to quantity rather than quality. More often than not, some of the codecs in such packs conflict with each other, not to mention conflicting with the installed VS codecs. But if you are after a specific codec which is part of such a pack, then by all means you can select that one codec and download it.

Hi tinybeetle,
Yes, it is also recommended to install all those specific codecs for the specific video file formats that will be used when you edit within the program. Also, codecs are essential files for encoding and decoding.

Codecs are often designed to emphasize certain aspects of the media, or their use, to be encoded. For example, a digital video (using a DV codec) of a sports event needs to encode motion well but not necessarily exact colors, while a video of an art exhibit needs to perform well encoding color and surface texture.
Audio codecs for cell phones need to have very low latency between source encoding and playback; while audio codecs for recording or broadcast can use high-latency audio compression techniques to achieve higher fidelity at a lower bit-rate. >>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec
