Strange happening wth project file

Post by Viddynick »

Hi all

I spent 4.5 hours this pm editing my latest project. Great fun - until I came to close down that is! I had loaded in my named project file as normal - but somehow during my editing time, it turned itself into an untitled project file! I don't understand this, as all the content relating to the film was there when I opened it and I merely edited from there on. I did Control+S periodically to ensure all my latest edits were saved. I then came to close the whole suite down - an error box appeared something relating to a untitled project file - I was soooooo tired (you know how it is!) that I ignored it feeling I was working on my named file - in hindsight I shouldn't have ignored it I guess - I then closed and re-opened the file to find all the content I had added this pm was not there! Blah! On looking in the .vsp project file folder, I found my named file and clicked properties - which then said it was created yesterday - 4th April and modified 4th April so it seems that file had not been touched! How then, was I able to work on the content (incl. titles etc) if the project file says it had not been accessed today??? Any ideas cos right now I am feeling like giving up on my very enjoyable hobby!!! Thanks, Viddynick.

This is a totally new happening. I've never heard of this occurring with any version. Since you saved periodically, could you locate anywhere on your system a VSP file called untitled? I'd do a search of my system for untitled.vsp to see if by some chance you were saving it.

Hi

The only though that comes to mind is if the project on 4th did not close properly, when next launching VS you will get a report asking you to open the recovered project, selecting yes will open the project as “untitled”

Save this giving it a new name.

Your original project will still be in your projects folder, you can now check the contents of each project allowing you to choose which to work on.

Thanks to both of you for your prompt response. I had already carried out that suggested - but at least I know it was the sensible thing to do! - thanks anyway. I have even searched in a recovery programme without success. Cold light of day today and I am trying to think HOW this happened! - but feeling more positive about attempting to do the whole lot again! I think I am going to "save as" and rename what's left of the content feeling the other is jinxed! I'll let you know if I discover what happened yesterday but I fear I had a visit from those dear old gremlins - I would hate to think it happened to somebody in this forum! Maybe I am unique - the phrase a bad worman always blames his tools come to mind but I am certain positive I did nothing out of the ordinary. Have been using these suites for some years. Thanks gents - will get back to you if I have anything interesting to report on this problem. Happy editing. Viddynick.

Continuing with my problem .................. I have searched around to try to resolve and now need clarification. My brain is scrambled. I have noticed that my project files are showing with Windows Media Player logo?? Stupid, but I can't remember if they should show that - ie opens with WMP. Should they be showing Corel logo? I have totally forgotten. If the latter, then somehow the file assn. has changed. I have been in to try and change a test file but cannot do this. Could someone point me in the right direction if I am correct in thinking this might be my problem???????? Apologies if this is nonsense - this is Nick's wife talking here as I am the Technician/engineer for all this!!!!! Thanks guys. Mrs. Viddynick.

Your correct, the VSP files should have a VS icon, and should show that they open with a version of VS. I think changing this should be the same for about any recent version of Windows OS. Right-click on a VSP file and select Open with. In the next dialog you may be presented with some various applications that Windows thinks you want to use. If VS is one of them, select it, AND at the bottom there should be the option Always use the selected program to open this kind of file, with a checkbox beside it. If it is not checked, check it.

If VS does not appear as a choice, then click + to the right of Other Programs to expand it for more choices. If VS is not among any of those, then press the Browse button to the right of the "Always use...", browse to where your VS is installed, locating and selecting the vstudio.exe file.

Hi Mrs. Viddynick

Wow
Are you saying that double clicking the Project Files that somehow have had their thumbnail changed to WMP actually plays in WMP.
(no you can't be saying that!)

If this is the case then there is some confusion going on here!

I am certain that Video Studio Project Document files (VSP) will not open in anything else except Video Studio

Hi Ron, Trevor and all

Firstly, thank you so much for your support with our problem. Looking back, what I was asking seems obvious but at the time there is confusion all round! How on earth it happened, I have no idea as all virus products revealed zilch. Obviously some sort of corruption which I have now fixed. Need more advice on another subject next so will post separately. This forum is invaluable and I hope one day I can be of help to someone as right now I feel I am taking advantage!!!

Thanks again
Mr and Mrs Viddynick.

Hope I'm not too late but what the problem sounds like to me is that Windows has somehow lost it's file associations.

This can happen in numerous ways but in past experiences it always comes down to someone playing around with the settings manually....the worst case scenario is a corrupted registry entry sometimes cause by a windows update or with using one of those registry cleaners.

Keep an eye in Event Viewer in case it's a physically corrupted segment on the hard drive (Event Viewer reports these as a "disc error")

Hi Clevo - thanks for your comments - yes, it was file assn. problem - though we cannot imagine how it happened! No tampering as far as we know though I suspect a registry cleaner as you say! Yes, will keep sharp eye out in Event Viewer - it was all a nightmare but appears to be working now. Thanks again .
