At first:
I was lucky with DMF2 (later DMF6), where i could edit my mpeg-2 files, which i recorded in DV-format onto disk and processed it with MSP7 to mpeg2. I have a big theme-based database of filled DVD-directories, which inlude the covers and disk labels as well.
problems:
Since i modified my environment to digital tv, i noticed that MSP7 and DMF6 (DMF7 also) cannot handle such *.ts files. Therefor i used some converting tools alike VLC (but sometimes the sound is gone afterwards) to eliminate the additional information and/or Maxrecode (problems with HD-files and unaccurate cuts) to get processable DVD-compatible files, when the file containes format changes.
I mostly convert recorded tv (*.ts-files from my SAT-Kathrein 922 Receiver/Harddisk-Recorder) which came down with bitrates >=15.000, to burn them with reduced bitrates onto a DVD.
VS X4 has normally no problem with *.ts files (but the included burn module), when that files contain no format change.
But when there is a change from 16:9 to 4:3 oder vice versa within the file, VS X4 will freeze after some seconds during the processing of cutting the start and the end of the wished video parts (same with DMF7 - DMF6 accepts the file after a long time, but you cannot edit it and program slows down heavy.
Another crash scenario is the combination of 16:9 and 4:3 files in DMF6 and the burn module of VS X4.
That often ends with a complete freeze of the program (independent of moving menues on oder off).
(in such cases I have to (pre)render with a free tool (Maxrecode) in 4:3 (or 16:9), what allows me to override the perhaps within the file contained or otherwise acknowledged format info).
But i see differences at the machines i work with:
1. AMD Phenom II X4 with MSP7 (and other Ulead software) installed has less crashes than
2. Intel II Quad without MSP7 (only VS X4 and DMF6 installed). That machine works as mail, printer and file server.
Both XP SP3 with 4 GB RAM (3.4 GB) and plenty Terrabytes of disk space.
Maybe on the first machine are older Ulead Modules in action what helps to prevent some of such crashes?
Security software is the same on both machines, DMF and VS X4 processes and used directories are excluded.
Questions about questions.
Another problem i see in the non automatic and intransparent handling of the switch-function for nonsquare-pixels in processing of 4:3 and 16:9 videos. That caused me additional freezes and crashes, until i found the reason.
In VS X4 processed 4:3 files should be 16:9, but nonsquare-pixels disabled, when the output mpeg2-file will done to put it later into the burn module or DMF6.
Any help or hints available?
My dream:
Simply put my trailer and the recorded file(s) into DMF6 (or whatever), make the needed cuts, glues and dissolves (if needed), make a more or less simple menu and output that into a DVD-directory structure, to burn it afterwards with "ImgToolBurn".
Sounds easy and should be so, too - but the reality is different.
