How to link audio and video in X3?

Post by jecklehead »

I tried the knowledge base and searched the forum which came back with tons of threads with the word link but nothing of use.

Anyway I assume there is a way to link audio and video together to if you move one they both move?

Thanks!

I am afraid you have given us almost nothing on which to base a sensible reply... What format is your video, where did it come from, what editing have you done to it, and when are you trying to link the two together: during editing, during rendering, or in the burning process. These are just some initial questions. If you provide some further information, perhaps someone will be able to help...

Sorry, ill explain more.

Using MTS files and I am editing,

I want to be able to link a sound effect to a video clip so if I move the video clip the sound effect moves with it. Another way of looking at it would you are editing a fight scene and you have clips a,b,and c. You place a punch sound effect under clip C and later decide to shirnk clip A which obviously moves clip C and now your sound effect is not placed correctly. Of course I can just go move it manually but if your talking about 200 sound effects...

This was really easy to do in my other software and for the life of me I can't find an option for it in X3.

Maybe it does not have this option?

Sadly VS does not allow locking tracks together. It must be done manually. :(

Just a suggestion which 'should' work (I haven't actually tried it) - if you made the sound effects into a video , using say a transparent background, could you not then put that into a video track and turn on Ripple Editing

Not that this helps your case, but it may help in the future. Earlier versions of VS used to have the tabs across the top organized into a terrific order for editing video. (I believe) it was Capture, Edit, Effects, Audio, Share. In other words, your audio should be the last thing you add, after all your editing is finished.

Thanks for the tips guys,

Does the new version "X4" have this option?
I am trying to avoid using CS4 because it's crash happy and I have to save every time I change anything.

Thanks

I would recommend that you render clips a, b, and c before hand so they have their own audio then import each clips into a new project file when you want to add another sound effects like the punch sound etc. Also, you can use the Ripple editing button of the program. Ripple Editing allows you to insert clips while automatically moving other clips (including empty spaces) aside, to make room for it on the Timeline. Use this mode to maintain the original track synchronizations when inserting additional clips.

To insert clips in Ripple Editing mode:

1. Click Ripple Editing to activate the panel, then select the corresponding box for each track where you want to apply Ripple Editing.

2. Drag the clip to insert from the Library to the desired position on the Timeline. As soon as the new clip is in place, all clips where Ripple Editing is applied will shift accordingly while maintaining their track positions relative to one another.

Note: Ripple Editing can be applied from any of the three project views.

Ripple Editing also works when removing clips. Overlay and Title Tracks, and audio tracks maintain their position relative to the video after the clip in the middle has been removed. Hope these helps. Thank you. :)
