VS Pro X4 Cannot Initialize Application

Post by Willy Eckerslyke »

Hello everyone - my first post here.

I'm trying to run the trial version of VS Pro X4 after picking up a disc at Focus on Imaging at the NEC in Birmingham.
I've trioed installing it on two different PCs and get the following message on both:
Cannot Initialize Application
Invalid Parameter [16345:1:1] [15034:1:32]

Any ideas?
I was very impressed with the demo at the NEC and am keen to buy, but not if it's going to misbehave.

Could you fill in the other items in your profile so that we can see your pc specs, this could help.
Does it always fail at the same point of installation?
Maybe a bad disc, try downloading the trial from the web site and try again.
Do you have any other versions of VS installed?
ANy other video editing apps installed?
Are any anti virus and firewalls enabled to allow the installation?
Are you connected to the net? I'm Not sure if the disc trial wants to connect to register?????

Thanks for the quick reply. I've updated my profile. This applies to one PC, but it also fails in the same way on my second PC which has a lower spec.
Yes it fails at the same point of installation every time.
Not a bad disc as one is running from the free disc, but the other was downloaded from the website.
No other versions installed. Second PC has recently had a replacement hard disc, so is pretty 'clean'.
Adobe Premiere Elements installed on the main machine, but not the second one. Adobe Design Premium CS3 installed on both.
Sophos Anti-virus and Spybot running on both machines.

Both machines connected to the net. Yes a connection is needed to register - it took me several days to get this to work as the registration process kept coming up with "Page Not Found". I almost gave up then discovered it was because I had cookies disabled in Internet Explorer. Once enabled, the registration step worked fine. It was while struggling with this that I tried the second PC and the downloaded trial from the website. (A message that cookies are required would have saved me a lot of trouble and patience at that stage.)

Yes. And I have no problem installing other software. This appears to be installed fully, the program opens up, but throws up the "Cannot initialize Application" message before I get a chance to do anything.
I've been a Corel customer for years, and put up with the foibles of the some pretty unstable versions of CorelDraw but assumed that was all ancient history.
Now this feels like all deja vu all over again.

Hi

There is a similar issue on this post.

seems strange that Gary seems to be having installation problems, maybe there a common cause.

Success! I now have it running.
It seems that the problem was down to conflicting profiles. When I installed the trials on two seperate PCs (to try to figure out the Page Not Found issue), both installations had tried to use the same network location, on my M: drive, for their profiles - then fell over when I tried to run one of them.
After I deleted all the files in the Ulead folder on my M: drive, the software started up properly, creating a new set of profile files. I guess that as long as I don't try to run it on the second PC, it will be OK.

Spoke too soon...
Now it crashes after 10 minutes of work with a C++ Runtime Error.

Hi! Please make sure that your Windows is up to date.
You can get the updates from Start Menu > Windows Update
Also please make sure you have the latest version of video and sound card drivers. You can download the drivers from your manufacturer's website.
Also, please try to download DirectX. You may download it from this link:

Thanks Kris, I've just tried all that but unfortunately it still crashes - only now I get a second error message after the runtime error one.
Sorry, but I'm giving up on it. I've persevered for long enough and wasted too much time already.

Yes, it has bitten me as well. I haven't used VS4 for about six weeks. I used it to make a DVD for our school kindergarten. I started it three weeks ago and it would not start. With an error message :-

Yellow triangle with exclamation mark with "Cannot initialize application." [15034:1:20] OK.

I have contacted Corel Support and opened a case. They say to deinstall and reinstall VS4. Done that. Three times! Using Administrator rights in WIN7 X64 Ultimate SP1. Even with UAC turned down to the lowest level.
The funny thing is that I had been using it for some time, and then, well it just won't start up.... No changes to system other than normal MS windows, flashplayer, and other such updates not directly connected to Corel VS4

It is frustrating as I have used VS for 10 years. Yet it has bitten even me.
I have read the posts here but to no avail. If I work it out I will definitely post the response here.

Corel support helped a lot. The contact via email suggested as before, and also to delete the registry key folder for ulead. Still no avail. I did the dirty, that I had been putting off, and wiped the HDD and reinstalled windows and all applications afresh. The lot! With trepadation I installed VSX4. But still no joy. Did not start up. The Corel case was closed because I hadn't replied within 10 days as I was on holidays. I reopened it, with a few niggles with the changes in the web site, but that's another story. Anyhow it was suggested that I contact the Australian Corel support rep. He logged in to my machine and did the checks. All updates in place.
The DISPLAY VIDEO CARD DRIVER, for NVIDIA GeForce GTX260 card, was out of date by a year. My version was 8.17.12.5936. He updated it to 8.17.12.8562.
Restarted my machine.
Asked me to start VSX4.
it WORKED!
In a nutshell, the video driver may need to be updated if you see the error message "Cannot initialize application."
Amongst other updates....
Corel did assist in a professional manner, quick in, quick out, no chit chat, to assist the next customer.
Many thanks to them! 10mins to fix!
