VSP file size

Post by bydesigngroup »

Hi there everyone,

I've posted a couple of times here before, and this time I'm having a bit of a problem with the project sizes I'm dealing with.

I have shot all my footage on the same JVC Everio camera and all seven projects are the same length. However, I'm faced with six of the .VSP project files being ~100KB, but there's one that is 12,624KB and I don't know why. What I do know is that it's pixellating some of the footage and is extremely slow to render. Does anyone have any ideas as to why the project file size should be that big?

What are the properties of the clips involved?

They are all (on each project, not just the large one):

PAL HDMV
MPEG-2 Video, Upper Field First
24 bits, 1920x1080, 16:9
25 fps
Variable bit rate (Max 28000kbps)

MPEG Audio Layer 2 Files
48kHz, 16 bit, stereo
Layer 2
Bit rate: 384 kbps

But these are the same for all projects. There msut be something cluttering up the project, but I can't for the life of me think what it could be.

In each project there's simple colour correction, anti-shake - nothing horrific in terms of effects.

I have also tried relinking everything back to the original video files from the camera, but the project file size does not decrease. Is there something that I'm overlooking in terms of its effects on the VSP size?

Hi

The VSP file size appears to be linked to the amount of editing being performed, which is to be expected, it is also affected by the type of video being used.

I have a mix of HD and standard DV-Avi and I can see a vast difference in size.
I don’t worry about it……………

But if your having quality problem (pixellating) then have you applied any filters or the like. They don’t show that well but do have a profound effect on the video.

Hello bydesigngroup,

can you tell me when does the pixellating of footage happens? Since this can be the result of the smart proxy and for the slow render, this is relative to the quality and size of your project, the larger and greater the quality and longer the render process. This will still depend on the type of computer that you are using.

All the projects use the HD footage, so there's no problem there. I'll take a look through and see whether it's a problem with the editing, whether there's too much for it to do.

The pixellation mainly occurs when things are moving fast on the screen, e.g. someone waves a hand. I'll take a look.

Many thanks,

David

One of the main reasons for pixellation in these circumstances is that you have somehow or other screwed up the Field Order. Your original Field Order will have been Upper Field First. But if for some reason or other, Lower Field First has crept in with that one video, that would account for it. Can you right click on that one video in the VS timeline or library window, and copy all its Properties here please...

Hi Ken,

The properties are the same as those pasted above. All are Upper Field First - I have checked all those, especially since my previous question. Can overzealous colour correction be a cause possibly?

And when I say pixellation, it's breaking down into horizontal lines.

Certainly can! But I have no real idea what you mean by over zealous!!!

I'm experimenting, and it seem that anti-shake is causing a massive variation in VSP size. I'll keep playing around.

And when I say overzealous, I mean a small white balancing!

By taking out all colour correction and anti-shake, I've still only reduced the file size to 3,744KB - a far cry from the 100KB that most of them are!

Does this lead on to a bigger question of what length the original shots should be? I would have thought trimming them on the timeline would use only the parts needed. Would it make that much of a difference if I'd started with shorter clips from a footage point of view?
