Vid capture not working in VS x4

Post by gkamer »

I downloaded video studio x4 trial to test drive. I have the upgrade boxed version on the way. I'm running it on my Win7 Home Premium system, 6 gig ram. My camera is a JVC gr-d850 mini DV tape camera. I connect the camera to my computer using a 4-6 pin avi cable. The computer detects the camera with no problem. However, when I open VS x4, it tells me no camera is detected or not connected. My laptop has a 4 pin firewire connection. If I use a 4-4 pin cable between the laptop and camera and open VS x4 it detects the camera with no problem.Any thoughts on why the desk top can detect the camera but the software on it can't? Kind of has me stumped. And using the laptop instead is not really an option since it is way under powered to handle what I plan to throw at this program. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Can you try capturing using either Windows Movie Maker set to capture DV, or else download and install the small freeware program WinDV which a number of us here use: windv.mourek.cz If you have trouble with either of them, then we will know to look for something wider than VS as the culprit!

That being said, during the beta testing process, one of the first things number of us tested was Firewire capture, particularly from analogue source material, but more generally as well. And it worked fine -- which is the first we could say about analogue capture via Firewire since VS10.

Is your laptop running Win 7 or an earlier version of Windows? I ask since some people seem to have difficulty with the latest Firewire drivers and need to install the legacy version of the Firewire driver. I will need to do a bit of a search to find a link to that, though it was here in the last couple of days in another thread...

EDIT: Found the link (posted by Skier Hughes -- thanks!): http://www.myvideoproblems.com/ProblemP ... tureW7.htm

Ken,
Thanks for your quick reply. I tried the driver update suggestion, unfortunately, no joy. I had a though though.... Do you think the fact my system is 64bit not 32bit might be relevent? I am looking at a few other things and I'll report back shortly. I did download WinDV and have not installed it yet and I'm downloading windows Movie Maker as we speak (relatively speaking). I'll report back shortly.

I've tried both Windows Movie Maker as well as WinDV and either of those programs will let me do captures from te camcorder. It's as if they do not detect it, even though Win7 video export wizard pops open as soon as I connect the camera. Could the fact that I'm running the 64bit version of Win 7 perhaps have some relevence?

The 64 bit shouldn't come into this.

Have you tried the software that came with the video camera?

Hi

The first program to take control of your camera will stop other software from doing so.
Disable the video export wizard then try again.

If i open Video Studio and go to the capture window the program recognises the camera, however when i open WinDV it does not see the camera.
The same thing in reverse using Win DV first stops VS seeing the camera.

Only one program at once i'm afraid.

A quick recap of my problem:

Unable to get Video Studio X2 or X4 to see either of my camecorders. with camcroders connected to the
computer, and opening either X2 or X4 and going to the capture screen neither programs detects the
camera connected to the computer and thus are no able to access the camcorders.

Camcorders: JVC GR-D850 and JVC GR-D870.

Operating system-Win7 Home Premium 64bit
Hardrive-1TB
Memory-6 gig RAM.
Processor-2.93 gigahertz Intel Core i3 530

The computer detects both cameras when they are connected. They bother show up in Control Panel/Devices and Printers.
Bother cameras are detected in WinDV and capture of video is possible thorugh that program as well as Windows Movie Maker.

Video Studio X2-X4 still refuse to accept that a camera is connected to the computer. Both camera are connected to the computer via a 4 pin to 6 pin AV cable.

I have gone into Control Panel/Device Manager and changed the IEEE 1394 OHIC Compliant Host Controller to Legacy without joy.

I have specifically listed both program as exceptions in Windows Fire Wall. When camera are connected the
Auto Play\Dgital Video Device window opens and both programs are listed. Selecting either one to open with results in no joy.
Turning off Auto Play completly and accessing Capture from within either program results in no joy.

What is trange is that on my Laptop, when I connect eithercamera via the 4 pin port on the camera to the 4 pin port n the latop
I do not encounter this problem. Any additional thoughts?

You will eat your heart out and waste hours worrying over this. If WinDV works, then use that. Yes, VS should work. But if it doesn't and you have a perfectly fine workaround, then move on.

A lot of us here use WinDV anyway, even if capture works in VS. It has the added advantage of being able to assign a sensible name to the incoming files, instead of the gobbledegook of VS's numerical/date naming system. Simply capture in WinDV then open in VS for editing.

Ken,
I have to agree with you. The only disappointment I have is not being able to take advantage of Video Stuidos Stop Motion feature. I expected to have a lot of fun with that when I sank my dollars into the upgrade. which now seems to have been a somewhat waste of money. I'm not exacly sure what other advantges X4 is going to have over X2 now. Anyway bud, I appreciate your efforts to help me out here, you take care and have a good day..... :)

Why can't you take advantage of Stop Motion? If we are talking about the same thing, it has nothing to do with capture...

Ken,
Perhaps I wasn't clear. When I refered to capture, what I meant to relay was the software does not detect the presence of the camcorder at all. So both Capture and Stop Motion fail to detect a camera interfaced with the software. When the camera is connected and Stop Motion selected, the screen displays the message "No Camcorder Device is Available" and I do not have the option to select the camera source manually. I have not yet explored the Time Lapse feature, but if that is also dependent upon access to an external camera source it likewise will be a feature I will be unable to take advantage of.

Hi

Some users have to follow the same route when connecting the camera and capturing with VS. I must admit I do not seem to have a problem but this is what I do:-

1 / Connect the camera via firewire (switched off)
2 / Launch Video Studio
3 / Switch to capture tab, then capture video
4 / Turn on the camera, after a pause…Video Studio recognises the camera and asks if I want to use it.
new device.JPG
5 / The input “Source” switches to my camera (Panasonic DV Device)
6 / The frames shows in the “Preview Window” I can capture.

Stop Motion

7 / I close the options panel, returning to the first Capture Tab panel
8 / I choose StopMotion
9 / The panel initially shows as “No Camcorder device is available” but the screen refreshes and when I play the camera the frames show in the preview screen
10 / After experimenting with the settings I was able to capture a Stop Motion sequence.

Trevor,
Thank you for taking the time to offer a suggestion to this problem. I tried your method exactly as described, unfortunately, no joy. I'll continue to explore this problem and who knows, I may yet discover a solution. In the mena time stay safe.

Sometimes it's not exactly that method, but a variation might work. Turn on the camera first before opening VS, open VS first then turn the camera on, etc.

Hello gkamer,

Capture feature works perfectly fine on my end and I'm using Windows Home Premium (64-bit). There could be a software conflicting with the program that is why it cannot detect the camera. You may also want to check if the driver that was provided with the camera is Windows 7 compatible. Checking the JVC web site that software appears to be for Windows XP only.

If you still cannot use the capture feature using your camera using VideoStudio Pro X4, I would suggest that you contact our Tech Support, so that they can further investigate the issue.
