VideoStudio Pro X3 Stops Capturing Video on Scene Changes

Post by tbergerx3 »

I am using VideoStudio Pro X3 on my Windows XP Pro machine (see profile for specifics) to capture and edit video from my Canon Elura 100 MiniDV Camcorder. The problem I am having is that VS Pro X3 is stopping the capture during scene changes. It stops both the software and the camera. This does NOT happen on every scene change, but happens at differing times throughout the tape. It requires me to restart the capture from that scene forward. This happens regardless of whether or not I have the 'Split by Scene' option enabled. It is frustrating to have to sit through the entire tape restarting the capture at various scene changes. Previous tapes I have used Windows Movie Maker to capture the video. I have tried WMM to capture these tapes and it does work successfully without stopping at scene transitions.
A related question is on Data Rate. The data rate listed under the properties menu in VS Pro X3 is almost 2x for the clips captured with VS Pro X3 vs the same clip captured with WMM while all other attributes are the same (including file size)?

Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like VS is having problems with the time code changes. I would simply go back to WMM to capture and import the clips into VS for editing.

Is there a difference or should I care about the difference with the data rate when captured with WMM vs VS Pro X3?

Well, first things first I guess. Make sure, in both VS and WMM, that you are capturing as DV-AVI or AVI. The "capturing" of DV-AVI via firewire is really only a transfer, so the data rates should be very similar if not the same. That they are vastly different leads me to believe you have a setting wrong somewhere.

The file format captured from both VS and WMM is AVI. The file size from both of these capture methods is approx 13GB for 1hr of video. To me this means the data/bit rate has to be the same? But yet the properties tab on VS shows a difference 1277.97 kbps for the WMM captured file vs 3512.11 kbps for the VS captured file? In WMM the properties for both show the same? Also, VS shows a 48kHz audio attribute for the VS captured file and 32kHz for the WMM while WMM shows 32kHz for both? Does the properties just not display correctly in VS?

Thanks!
