PSP8 Error reading from the file

Post by psplisa »

Hello,

I have my PSP 8 on both my computer at work (Windows XP) and here at home (the registered version on Windows 7 Home Premium). I get to do alot of creating at work and will transfer images from there to home. Ever since getting Windows 7 here at home, I will get an "An error has occurred while trying to read the file" when trying to open some of the image files. Not on all of them, but more frequently than I'd like. I do know some of the images are ones I created here at home, so I'm not sure why they can't be read.

Also, I found a patch for PSP 8 a little while ago but the link is bad. I know I've got an old version of PSP, but are patches for PSP 8 extinct now?

Thanks for any help on the error message. It's driving me nuts!

This may be the update you want: http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... 3321344576.

The old JASC ftp site seems to be non-working these days, and I didn't see anything on the current Corel ftp site for PSP versions that old.

As concerns your errors reading some of your image files, I hate to answer a question with a question, but here goes. What file type(s) are experiencing the problem (.jpg, .pspimage, .gif, .bmp, etc.)?

If it is other than PSP files, see if you can open them in another application or file viewer. If so, and you have a program with such ability, see if you can resave them (under another name, so you are no worse off than you are now if something doesn't work), and then open the resaved files in PSP.

If they are .pspimage files, is there a possibility that they have been opened in a newer version of PSP and then saved? Newer versions of PSP can save .pspimage files in a format that is not backward-compatible with older versions of PSP. This can be prevented by saving as a PSP 8 compatible file, in the Options dialog when saving the file.

I don't know how you are getting the files from one computer to another, but there could be file access or security issues. It might be that you don't have permission to access files created on the other computer.

I don't know that the PSP 8.10 update will necessarily fix your problem, but there were a few fixes involving specific file types. Personally, I haven't seen this problem much with PSP8--more so on XI and later versions.

Thank you for the responses!

I hit "reply" but can only see the last response (with the "wayback" links), so I'll probably forget to acknowledge a suggestion.

I just put the image on a thumb drive and transfer them that way, whether it's from the work computer to home or vice versa. The images are in .psp format. I do very little .gif or animated images. At home I've checked all the file format associations. I haven't thought to make sure about the compatibility. But what has me stumped is that not all of the images fail to open. I can swap back and forth and most all of them will open in either computer. If I've been working on an image at work I just make sure I save it as always, then stick it (sometimes several images) on the thumb drive, go home and put them on my home computer. Sometimes they'll all open okay, sometimes all but one. When I got to work this morning, I saved that particular image I was trying to open on my thumb drive, will copy it over the one at home and see what happens. It opens fine here at work.

The PSP 8 is from the very same CD. I'm thinking it's got to be something with Windows 7, but it still doesn't explain why some images will open okay and some won't when I work and save them the same way. Or maybe I'll try another thumb drive. I've just started saving some images as .png here at work, but haven't taken them home yet. Maybe they'll work better in that format.

Thanks for all the links and suggestions, I will do the updates and report back on if they seemed to help.

Didn't think about quoting. Arg.

**Mainly .psp images. I work mostly with .psp and .jpg. I don't think (thinking here at work) that I've had any problems opening any jpegs. I will have to double check to make sure when I save an image at home (.pspimage) that it opens fine here at work (.psp).

If it is other than PSP files, see if you can open them in another application or file viewer. If so, and you have a program with such ability, see if you can resave them (under another name, so you are no worse off than you are now if something doesn't work), and then open the resaved files in PSP.

**Haven't tried that, will have to see if I can view it another way.

**I used the same PSP 8 CD on both computers. Never had the problem when I had Windows XP at home, too. Just since getting a new computer with Windows 7. We'll be getting new computers here at work hopefully before too long, so it'll be interesting to see what happens then! Will have to double check the compatibility options.

I don't know how you are getting the files from one computer to another, but there could be file access or security issues. It might be that you don't have permission to access files created on the other computer.

**No problems there. I just use a thumb drive. I do use different ones, so maybe that is the issue. But still doesn't explain why some images open fine, some don't. :?

I don't know that the PSP 8.10 update will necessarily fix your problem, but there were a few fixes involving specific file types. Personally, I haven't seen this problem much with PSP8--more so on XI and later versions.

**Couldn't get any of the links to work. That one by itself is the one I tried but it goes to an error page. The wayback links wouldn't work, either. They kept trying to load but never did anything. Unless it takes longer than I'm giving it!

Sorry for the double answers in the single post I did - should have thought about that quote button first! Thanks again ..

There may be some compatibility issues between PSP 8 and Windows 7. I know some people have gotten it to work, some not, and some have it working "with issues." Officially, only X2 Ultimate and X3 are fully supported on Windows 7. For more information, see http://corel.custhelp.com/app/answers/d ... D%3D/sno/0. Personally, none of my computers has Windows 7, so I cannot provide first-hand information on that.

You probably already do this, but make sure that your work computer has finished writing to the thumb drive before removing it. Use the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray to be sure, as Windows may still be writing to the thumb drive, behind the scenes, even though it appears that the file copy operation has completed. Here, I took particular interest in the fact that you said that sometimes all but one of the images would be readable. If the one that is not ok was the last one you copied to the thumb drive, that may point to the fact that the thumb drive was still in use when it was removed. Just a thought.

Try searching Google for psp810enp. However, be careful where you download anything, and be sure to scan the download before using it, back up your files, and exercise the usual cautions. Stay away from the file sharing networks.

EDIT: Try the following link: http://replay.waybackmachine.org/200809 ... 810enp.exe. I did just now, and the download started. (I killed it, because I don't need it.) However, the Internet Archive Wayback Machine is slow; you may have to wait a minute or two for each link to work, and you may have to try multiple times.

Hi again, sorry I haven't been back. My week got very busy and I haven't had a chance to do anything with PSP on either computer!

I hadn't thought about the thumb drive maybe not getting everything. I'll double check to make sure it has time to copy everything over before removing it. That would make sense why some of the files don't open. Hope it's that simple!

I'll check out the links again and do a search for the psp810enp. Yep, I always scan any downloaded file before opening. I did notice the wayback links appeared to be trying to "work", so I will give those extra time, too.

Once I get to try all the tips out, I'll let you know what happened. Thanks so much!
