My Canon HF S21 is set to record at PF25 (i.e 25 fps PROGRESSIVE), and also I choose the highest recording
quality : MXP (1920 X 1080, 24 Mbps). When I choose to save the .MTS file here`s what happens :
1. Choosing H.264-MAIN in the Compression tab, the video data rate is limited to 20000 KBps.
2. To have 25 fps (that is, PAL) AND progressive playback, my only choice is to output a file at
1280 X 720. If I choose 1920 X 1080 , AND Frame-based, the Frame Rate drop-down menu
becomes greyed out at 30 fps ! Of course, at the Corel VideoStudio tab, I have unticked the "Perform
non-sqare pixel rendering", because the source video is made of raster (i.e square) pixels, unlike
the HDV 1440 X 1080 recordings.
3. Choosing MPEG-4 HD, the Properties of the video file to be rendered appear as follows :
24bits, 1920 X 1080, 30fps
Frame Based
H.264 Main Profile video, 15000 Kbps
32000 Hz, 16bit, stereo
MPEG AAC Audio, 128Kbps
4. No luck either if I choose Blu ray > PAL H.264 (1920 X1080). The "improvement" appears to be the VBR
of 22700 Kbps, but VideoStudio insists on rendering interlaced (Upper Field first) out of my progressive
video. The same rendering settings appear if I choose AVCHD > PAL HD-1920.
I shall try the Template Manager and see if I can convince VS NOT to alter in any way the quality
of the source clip. Meanwhile, I am very interested to read about your experiences with 1080p.

Re: No 1080p saving in VS Pro X3
You are right. Progressive output is limited to 1280 x 720p. That is also the case with X4. There is a separate thread on this which is already getting lengthy: see http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 29#p213629 . My advice there is for people to get in touch with Corel directly about this to let their feelings be known. I have already raised it at least twice directly with them. They have not given me any time frame when or if VS is likely to be able to produce full 1080p output, either 25/30 fps or full 50/60 fps progressive which is now available with some camcorders.

I don't have X3. Isn't there a "Custom" setting (like in 11+ and X2) where one can set EVERYTHING to their needs when rendering a file? 25,000 kbs, 1920x1080, frame?
What about "Same as First Clip?" Just asking.

Video Studio will not set 1920 x 1080 as progressive.
The program will allow you to set a frame order, Upper or Lower but not Frame Based.
The option for Same as First Clip is greyed out when using these types of files.

I don't think VS X3 does anything wrong with your 1080 25p (scanned by the sensor) footage. The strean is interlaced! Just save as interlaced, and you wil get the right progressive image on yr TV screen. Just read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressiv ... nted_frame.
On the other VS can not cope with 1080p50 (50 progr frames/sec),just like most others can't...even the more pro ones..

Re: No 1080p saving in VS Pro X3
I attempted to use the Movie Template Manager, to create a 1920 X 1080p template, but it`s simply
impossible. It`s crystal clear, that VideoStudio X3 (and, to my dissapointment, X4 as well) doesn`t
include code about handling PROGRESSIVE FULL HD video. It`s sad really, because all modern LCD
widescreen televisions, and all TFT LCD computer monitors are in essence, progressive scan displays.
The era of interlaced video is well and trully behind us, associated with those bulky CRT TVs and
computer monitors. VideoStudio has to catch on.
