Hi
I have a Canon Kiss X4 camera & i shoot in raw format, when i open the raw file in Raw Lab, I dont get the slide bar to adjust - Exposure & Sharpness...how do i get these slide bar up in Raw lab or has it been removed in the lastest version of Photo Pro X3?
I am running ultimate version 13.2.1.20 on Vista Ultimate 64bit
Thanks

Re: Raw Lab - PSPPX3
On my Canon Rebel XTi RAW files (Kiss X I believe) they open with all sliders available. However I would rather use Canon's DPP for the initial work on the raw files than just about any other raw processor.
One thought, do you have the Canon RAW Codec version 1.7.0 or later installed on your system?

I don't know if not having it would make any difference but it couldn't hurt.

Opps.. sorry...
I did not saw that you are already using PSP X3 Ultimate. If the raw file was working before, then you can try resetting your workspace.
You can do that by pressing and holding down the SHIFT key then double-click on the PSP icon then when you received the message "DO YOU WAN TO RESTORE PAINTSHOP Pro TO ITS DEFAULT STATE?" just click OK.

As already mentioned, the Digital Photo Professional RAW converter software that comes with your camera is excellent and well worth the trouble of installing.flossed wrote:Hi

I have just upgraded to version 3.9.0.2. (There might be a newer version still, I haven't checked yet).
Unfortunately X3's RAW converter has a very bad reputation, but of course it's up to you which one you use

Camera wise, I am very happy with what I have.
Can you tell me what the new version of DPP does that I can't live without?
It's nice that they've added a Reject box and the Sharpening has some extra sliders, but that isn't exactly earth-shattering.
That's what PSP is there for to finish.
Did you download your latest DPP from the Chinese website?

I would have to scratch my head to remember now as to what came in recently. I got it from the normal Canon uk site.Joelle wrote:Can you tell me what the new version of DPP does that I can't live without?

They have introduced the standard Star Rating (1 to 5 Stars etc), which I like as it is also in ZoomBrowser.
Highlight and Shadow are useful as 'mini' Contrast options.
I think Nose Reduction came in a while ago, as did Auto Lighting Optimiser.
Oh and Trimming/Angle Adjsutment.
I always prefer to be on the latest version - that's why I am on X3 Ultimate
There's a Rugby match to watch now, but I'll think about it...

Re: Raw Lab - PSPPX3
Another question, I shoot in raw format on my Canon 550D, does raw files have DPI info? cause PSPPX3 shows its 72 DPI, is there a way to change dpi for raw on PSPPX3, I am just curious, i can use DPP to do it but i want to try it on PSPPX3.
Thanks

Re: Raw Lab - PSPPX3
DPI is a useless number. Please don't worry yourself with the DPI straight out of camera. You can change it all day long and unless you make a change to the actual print size you really are just shuffling numbers. Google "DPI Myth" and you will see example after example of it not making one tiny bit of difference at all.
Aside from the newest features for Canon's DPP the program needs to be at least as current as the camera that you are using. RAW files may not be editable if you don't have the correct version or newer. Canon's DPP will not only convert RAW files, but you can use it to apply other adjustments as well. For example, if you shoot in black and white and want to be able to retain what you saw on the LCD of the camera at the time of shooting then DPP is your answer. Shot it in Portrait Picture Style yet you really wanted to have it in Autumn Hues, no problem. DPP can do it. You can even set DPP to open the files in PSP when you batch process to 16 bit Tiff files, which is probably at least as good as if you had used PSP to process the RAW files in the first place.
I have yet to see a downside to PSP not trying to keep up with RAW file types. There's tons of camera manufacturers with new cameras coming out every year. To be on top of all of that would require a lot more effort and frankly I don't see the return on that effort being worth it. I'm not saying I don't appreciate Corel for trying, but I don't fault them when PSP doesn't support this or that RAW file. There's just tons of RAW file types out there, and frankly I'd rather they fix other bugs first.

Re: Raw Lab - PSPPX3
I think what it all boils down to is that you shoot raw to get the best quality and the highest degree of control over your photographs, but Paint Shop Pro doesn't allow either of these.
Paint Shop Pro offers too few controls in their Raw Lab, makes the conversion before you choose your adjustments, uses an obsolete demosaicing algorithm, and can't save the raw conversion in a small sidecar file. This means that you can't have a high degree of control over your image, won't get the best possible quality and will waste a lot of space with huge bitmap copies of your images.
Every other raw converter offers far more control and higher quality output. This can all be saved in a non-destructive format that can be easily readjusted and saves tens of megabytes of storage space for every converted image.
Conclusion... either use something other than PSP for raw conversion, or don't bother shooting raw.
